2007 Land Rover Range Rover Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2007 Land Rover Range Rover Review
A revised interior and a more sophisticated all-wheel-drive system are the 2007 changes for Land Rover's flagship SUV. Range Rover seats five and comes in HSE and Supercharged trims. The HSE has a 305-hp 4.4-liter V8, the Supercharged has a supercharged 400-hp 4.2-liter V8. A 6-speed automatic with manual shift gate is the lone transmission. Range Rovers have all-wheel drive with low-range gearing. For '07, they add Land Rover's Terrain Response system, which has a console switch that enables the driver to change suspension and powertrain calibrations to accommodate normal driving, slippery pavement, mud, sand, and low-speed off-roading. A locking center differential is standard, and a locking rear differential becomes available for '07.

ABS and traction/antiskid control are standard, as is hill descent control designed to limit speed on steep descents. Also standard are front side airbags, front and rear head-protecting tubular side airbags, and, for '07, a driver knee airbag. All Range Rover interiors are revised for '07 with new seats, dashboard, gauges, controls, and storage bins. A navigation system, rearview camera, front and rear obstacle detection, and wireless cell phone link are standard.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Typically based on mainstream Large SUVs, Premium Large SUVs are super-sized luxury liners. All are powerful, pricey, and extremely thirsty at the pump.

Our Best Buy is the Cadillac Escalade. Our Recommended picks are the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Audi Q7, Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.

News
Sources see no major near-term changes for Range Rover. The current design is now five years old, and past Land Rover practice suggests a replacement isn't due for another three years at least.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

HSE Class Average
6 5.4

HSE only '07 Range Rover made available for test so far. Though a heavyweight, it has ample power for daily driving. Land Rover quotes 8.3 sec 0-60 mph for HSE, 7.1 for Supercharged. Transmission smooth, with sport mode providing noticeably quicker shifts.
Fuel Economy

HSE Class Average
2 2.5

Test HSEs averaged 12.3-14.1 mpg. Land Rover recommends premium-grade fuel for HSE, requires it for Supercharged.
Ride Quality

HSE Class Average
7 6.6

Almost luxury-sedan composed on most surfaces. Little tire thump on expansion joints, and air suspension copes ably with pavement undulations. No opportunity to test with available 20-inch tires.
Steering/Handling/Braking

HSE Class Average
5 4

A mountain goat off-road and carlike on-road. Good grip, but tall build contributes to pronounced body lean in corners. Compact-for-class turning circle a boon for close-quarters driving. Stopping performance good for a big SUV.
Quietness

HSE Class Average
7 6.7

Engine emits a refined snarl during acceleration, is inaudible otherwise. Impressively little wind or road noise for a tall SUV. Virtually no coarse-surface tire thrum.
Controls

HSE Class Average
4 6

Most controls handy, but orientation to daunting array of cryptic switches and knobs takes time. Navigation system separate from climate controls, but integrates audio functions, complicating what should be simple adjustments. Some testers find gauges small, hard to read in certain light conditions.
Details

HSE Class Average
7 7

The interior is premium all the way. Materials used befit the Range Rover's premium pedigree.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

HSE Class Average
8 8.3

Generous head and leg room. Tall driving position. Seats comfortably supportive. View aft and to sides blocked by thick headrests and roof pillars, making standard obstacle detection necessary. Standard rearview camera prone to collecting road grime, limiting its usefulness. Step-in steep for shorter people.
Room/Comfort (rear)

HSE Class Average
7 7.1

Adult-size head and leg room. Bottom cushion a bit short for best leg support. Narrow thresholds combine with tall ride height for awkward entry/exit.
Cargo Room

HSE Class Average
7 7.3

Ample room for most needs behind rear seat, but overall cargo volume tight for the class. Range Rover's liftgate has opening glass and a clamshell design that creates a drop-down tailgate section. High load floor complicates loading of large items. Dual glove boxes, large door pockets make for good interior storage.
Value within Class

HSE Class Average
5 5.5

Range Rover stands out among premium SUVs for its balance of on-road manners, off-road ability, and high-class accommodations. The updates for '07 further polish its upscale credentials, while the Supercharged model adds more muscle--for a hefty price premium. There are less-expensive alternatives that offer similar performance and better fuel economy, but for Range Rover's well-heeled shoppers, little else will do.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Land Rover Range Rover 4-door wagon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

From The Back Seat
Chuck Giametta (6) There will always be a more sensible alternative to an $85,000 vehicle. The Range Rover HSE's closest competitors in terms of prestige and quality execution, the Audi Q7 and maybe the Mercedes-Benz R500, are better values, if quite expensive themselves. But if $85,000 is what the market says it requires to obtain this level of character, refinement, and useful performance on- and off-road, I won't argue. Even though this basic design still has BMW roots, the presence of the Jaguar engine somehow makes it all feel more cohesively British. Much of what you are paying for in this realm is individuality, and, if you're lucky, a sense of traditon. On that basis, the Range Rover HSE delivers in spades.

Ed Piotrowski For $20,000 less than the asking price of a Range Rover HSE, you can get into an Audi Q7, Cadillac Escalade, or Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. You'll get more passenger and cargo room, and in most cases more power and better fuel economy. These brands also have better reputations for resale value and not needing a frequent guest pass to the service department. Unless you want to go off-roading in style or covet the cachet of the Rover name, shop elsewhere to get your premium large SUV fix.

John Biel No doubt about it, the Range Rover is an expensive vehicle. But there's no denying that it delivers great comfort and capability. On-road performance is good, too, even with the nonsupercharged engine. The question for the well-heeled SUV buyer is if it's really worth the considerable premium asked for compared to its competition.
