No opportunity yet to test a base model. Standard-length EX test model did a brisk 8.4 sec 0-60 mph, but seemed slow to build speed. And it often seemed sluggish, the automatic transmission being very slow to kick down at full throttle for highway passing and even for low-speed acceleration. At least shifts were smooth.

One test Sedona averaged 22.7 mpg in mostly highway driving, 18.1 with more city use. A second test model averaged 16.1 mpg in mostly city driving and gas-eating acceleration tests. Kia recommends premium-grade fuel for Sedona.

Ride Quality

Comfortable for a minivan, but not quite carlike. Smooths out small bumps well, but bounces some over larger humps. EX's 17-inch tires make ride more jiggly over rippled pavement.

Steering/Handling/Braking

Typical for a large minivan, with marked cornering lean and a somewhat ponderous feel. EX's 17-inch tires don't noticeably improve handling. Steering nicely weighted but feels numb. Traction/antiskid control a welcome standard feature.

Quietness

Engine makes semi-refined full-throttle growl, is reasonably quiet otherwise. Tire thrum and body rumble noticed even in town driving. Wind rush joins in at highway speeds. One test EX suffered annoying rattles from 2nd- and 3rd-row seats.

All controls within easy reach, nicely sized, clearly marked. Standard three-zone climate control an upscale touch. Cabin short on soft-touch surfaces, long on nondescript plastics, but materials mostly in line with price.

Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Comfortable chair-height seats, yet head room ample. Lanky drivers may want more rearward seat travel, though. Easy ingress/egress. Thick windshield pillars can impede visibility to front corners, but clear sight lines elsewhere. Like some rivals, Sedona has a flip-down center tray table that's handy, but lets items slide around a lot.

Comfortable 2nd-row seats easy to reach, offer adult-size head and leg room even with front seats fully back. Tight 3rd row adult-comfortable for short trips only, and access squeezed by bulk of folded 2nd-row seats. Standard power sliding-door windows a fresh-air plus.

Cargo Room

Deep well behind 3rd-row seat a useful cargo hold; seat sections fold into it easily. Second-row seats tumble-fold for generous load volume. They can also be removed, but weigh 60 lb each. Plenty of cubbies for small items. Families may want the EX-only Power Pkg. with power sliding side doors and power rear liftgate.

Sedona and the similar Hyundai Entourage don't match our top-rated minivans for ride quality, powertrain response, or squeak-free construction. But they earn Recommended status for matching the class leaders in size, utility, and standard safety features. Warranty coverage is impressive, and they beat every comparably equipped rival on price.
