2007 Jeep Patriot Review
Jeep rolls out a companion to its Compass car-type SUV for 2007, but gives it more traditional Jeep styling and enhanced available off-road capability. Patriot has squarer styling than the Compass on which it's based, but is virtually identical in size. Sport and uplevel Limited trims are available. Both seat five, have a rear liftgate, and come with split folding rear seats. A 172-hp 4-cyl is standard. It mates with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). A 158-hp 4-cyl is available as a credit option for the 2WD Sport and comes only with the CVT. Patriot is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. Optional is an off-road-oriented AWD system that includes low-range gearing and hill descent control. Both of Patriot's AWD systems feature a console switch to lock in a 50/50 front/rear power split below 10 mph. Standard are curtain side airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, and traction/antiskid control with rollover sensors. Available features include fold down tailgate speakers, a navigation system, leather upholstery, a fold-flat front passenger seatback, and heated front seats. This evaluation is based on preview test drives.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Among utility vehicles, Compact SUVs are typically the least costly and offer the best fuel economy. Most utilize a car-type chassis and are not designed for heavy-duty, off-road use. Nearly all are five-passenger vehicles.

Our Best Buys include the Honda CR-V and Suzuki Grand Vitara. Our Recommended picks are the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Toyota RAV4.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Acura RDX, Honda CR-V, Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot, Jeep Wrangler, and Mitsubishi Outlander.
News
Patriot has just arrived, so it shouldn't see much change for a year or two. As with compatriot Compass, the engine bay has insufficient space for a V6, which might well prove to be a sales handicap.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

AWD Sport, CVT AWD Limited w/leather, man. AWD Limited w/Off Road Group, CVT. Class Average
3 4 3 4.6

Only 172-hp versions have been made available for testing. Adequate pull from a stop with either manual or CVT transmission, though models with the CVT struggles in passing and merging. We expect performance with the 158-hp engine to be marginal at best.
Fuel Economy

AWD Sport, CVT AWD Limited w/leather, man. AWD Limited w/Off Road Group, CVT. Class Average
5 5 5 5

No opportunity to measure. Similar Jeep Compasses averaged 22.4-24.4 mpg. Patriot uses regular-grade fuel.

Ride Quality

AWD Sport, CVT AWD Limited w/leather, man. AWD Limited w/Off Road Group, CVT. Class Average
6 6 5 5

Comfortable and stable. Some float over larger dips, jiggling over highway expansion joints. Off Road Group includes stiffer springs and all-terrain tires, has only modest impact on ride quality.
Steering/Handling/Braking

AWD Sport, CVT AWD Limited w/leather, man. AWD Limited w/Off Road Group, CVT. Class Average
5 5 5 4.8

Accurate, natural feeling steering. Good composure at highway speed. Moderate body lean in corners. Brakes have reassuring pedal feel.
Quietness

AWD Sport, CVT AWD Limited w/leather, man. AWD Limited w/Off Road Group, CVT. Class Average
5 5 4 4.5

Generally well hushed. Wind noise somewhat elevated compared to Compass. Some road noise always present, elevated further with Off Road Group's more aggressively treaded tires.
Controls

AWD Sport, CVT AWD Limited w/leather, man. AWD Limited w/Off Road Group, CVT. Class Average
5 5 5 5.6

Gauges large, easy to read. Controls generally handy and logically placed. Overall cabin quality below the class norm, however. Switchgear lacks precision feel, and hard, unyielding plastic dominates the decor.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

AWD Sport, CVT AWD Limited w/leather, man. AWD Limited w/Off Road Group, CVT. Class Average
6 6 6 6.1

Ample head room. High mounted seats contribute to generous leg room. Fold-out digital media holder in center console a nice touch, but when used, it renders armrest useless and obscures shifter.
Room/Comfort (rear)

AWD Sport, CVT AWD Limited w/leather, man. AWD Limited w/Off Road Group, CVT. Class Average
5 5 5 4.8

Adult-size head and leg room. However, flat, too-soft seat lacks support, may prove uncomfortable over long periods of time. Narrow door opening complicates entry/exit.
Cargo Room

AWD Sport, CVT AWD Limited w/leather, man. AWD Limited w/Off Road Group, CVT. Class Average
7 7 7 7.2

Cargo area enhanced by available flat-folding front passenger seat. Rear seats fold completely flat. Decent interior storage, though door map pockets are tiny.
Value within Class

AWD Sport, CVT AWD Limited w/leather, man. AWD Limited w/Off Road Group, CVT. Class Average
5 4 5 5.5

Compared to the mechanically similar Jeep Compass, Patriot feels more like an authentic Jeep. Compass and Patriot lack the on-road polish and cabin refinement of other vehicles in this class, but Patriot compensates somewhat with impressive available off-road capability. Most shoppers will be better served by more street-oriented trucks like the Honda CR-V or Suzuki Grand Vitara, the latter of which rivals Patriot's off-road prowess. But as a daily driver ready for the occasional off-road foray, a properly equipped Patriot makes some sense.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
