2007 Isuzu i-290 and i-370 Review
More-powerful engines trigger new names for Isuzu's 2007 pickups. These trucks are retrimmed versions of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, which get similar engine changes for '07. The 4-cyl Isuzu version becomes i-290 and has 185 hp; it replaces the 175-hp i-280. The 5-cyl version becomes the 242-hp i-370; it replaces the 220-hp i-350. The i-290 comes only as an extended cab with rear-wheel drive; traction control is optional. The i-370 comes as a rear-drive extended cab or as a crew cab with available 4WD. The 4WD system includes low-range gearing but should not be left engaged on dry pavement. The i-290 uses manual transmission or optional automatic; i-370 is automatic only. Extended cabs have a 6-ft cargo box, crew cabs a 5-ft box. All models include ABS. Curtain side airbags are standard on i-370 crew cabs, available for i-370 extended cabs. Heated power front seats and leather upholstery are exclusive i-370 options. The i-290 and i-370's performance and accommodations mirror those of similarly equipped Colorados and Canyons.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Compact Pickups offer a true-truck design in a relatively modest package. They are best suited for personal or light-duty use rather than commercial use, heavy hauling, or towing.

Our Best Buy is the Toyota Tacoma. Our Recommended picks are the Dodge Dakota and Honda Ridgeline.

New or significantly redesigned is the Ford Explorer Sport Trac.
News
The Isuzu brand is all but dead as far as U.S. consumers are concerned, down to just these cloned pickups and a retrimmed GM SUV, the Ascender. Sources say all will be phased out by model-year 2009 or 2010, and Isuzu seems to have nothing to replace them with. So unless General Motors decides to share some newer products, Isuzu will leave the retail market to focus on its profitable commercial-truck and truck-engine businesses.
