2007 Isuzu i-290 and i-370 Review
More-powerful engines trigger new names for Isuzu's 2007 pickups. These trucks are retrimmed versions of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, which get similar engine changes for '07. The 4-cyl Isuzu version becomes i-290 and has 185 hp; it replaces the 175-hp i-280. The 5-cyl version becomes the 242-hp i-370; it replaces the 220-hp i-350. The i-290 comes only as an extended cab with rear-wheel drive; traction control is optional. The i-370 comes as a rear-drive extended cab or as a crew cab with available 4WD. The 4WD system includes low-range gearing but should not be left engaged on dry pavement. The i-290 uses manual transmission or optional automatic; i-370 is automatic only. Extended cabs have a 6-ft cargo box, crew cabs a 5-ft box. All models include ABS. Curtain side airbags are standard on i-370 crew cabs, available for i-370 extended cabs. Heated power front seats and leather upholstery are exclusive i-370 options. The i-290 and i-370's performance and accommodations mirror those of similarly equipped Colorados and Canyons.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Compact Pickups offer a true-truck design in a relatively modest package. They are best suited for personal or light-duty use rather than commercial use, heavy hauling, or towing.
Our Best Buy is the Toyota Tacoma. Our Recommended picks are the Dodge Dakota and Honda Ridgeline.
New or significantly redesigned is the Ford Explorer Sport Trac.
News
The Isuzu brand is all but dead as far as U.S. consumers are concerned, down to just these cloned pickups and a retrimmed GM SUV, the Ascender. Sources say all will be phased out by model-year 2009 or 2010, and Isuzu seems to have nothing to replace them with. So unless General Motors decides to share some newer products, Isuzu will leave the retail market to focus on its profitable commercial-truck and truck-engine businesses.

Acceleration
| LS 4WD crew cab |
Class Average |
| 5 |

With either transmission, 4-cyl has adequate power for around town driving, but lacks reserve for passing or hauling heavy loads. 5-cyl is sprightly with 2WD, adequate with 4WD. Engine well-matched to quick-shifting automatic transmission.
Fuel Economy
| LS 4WD crew cab |
Class Average |
| 4 |

Test 2WD i-290 extended cab with automatic transmission averaged 21.1 mpg in mostly highway driving.
Ride Quality
| LS 4WD crew cab |
Class Average |
| 4 |
4.6 |
Overall, better than most compact pickups. Still evident, however, are abrupt vertical motions over bumps and dips, with some jittery feel on badly broken surfaces; otherwise composed.
Steering/Handling/Braking
| LS 4WD crew cab |
Class Average |
| 4 |
3.9 |
All corner with reasonable poise, though some testers found them slow to react to steering inputs. Grip limited in corners. Overall, among the more-agile compact pickups. Good straightline stability. 4WD models have noticeably larger turning radius than 2WD versions. Brakes provide quick, even stops.
Quietness
| LS 4WD crew cab |
Class Average |
| 4 |
4.5 |
Less wind and road noise than most competitors, though highway wind rush prominent around doors. Prominent tire whine on coarse surfaces. GM's 5-cyl engine louder, coarser than rivals' V6s.
Controls
| LS 4WD crew cab |
Class Average |
| 6 |
5.9 |
Climate controls simple to use, clearly marked, though audio controls require a long reach. Gauges easy to read, but some digital readouts wash out in direct sunlight. Interior materials and fit-and-finish above average for the class. Still, some test models had a few squeaks and rattles from the dashboard area.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)
| LS 4WD crew cab |
Class Average |
| 4 |
5.3 |
Lots of leg and head room. Seats adequately comfortable for long drives, though some testers complain of hard, flat seatbacks. Middle seat for occasional use only.
Room/Comfort (rear)
| LS 4WD crew cab |
Class Average |
| 4 |
2.9 |
Extended cab's rear seat best suits preteens; adults lack leg room even if front seats pushed well forward. Crew cab more spacious, but leg room still no better than a compact sedan's. On both, rear seats hard and undersized, and entry/exit difficult through small door openings.
Cargo Room
| LS 4WD crew cab |
Class Average |
| 4 |
4.1 |
Interior storage limited on regular cabs, good on extended and crew cabs with rear seats folded. Unique dual-position support cable allows tailgate to be secured partially open, permitting 4x8 sheets to be carried atop wheelwells with support from tailgate.

Like their Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon cousins, the i-290 and i-370 are useful, well-balanced small trucks. But a sparse dealer network and questions about the Isuzu brand's long-term viability in the U.S. market blunt their value. Sales have been slow, so deep discounts should be available.

Price note: LS extended cab requires LS Pkg.
Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's
manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker.
Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are
what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options.
The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price
and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently
throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's
window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
NA = price note available, NC = no charge.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's
worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to
rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury:
5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact
crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%;
1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover
when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%;
2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

Manufacturers may periodically offer additional coverage as a purchase incentive.
There offers are not reflected on this chart. The federal government requires two
other warranties. The Exhaust Emission Warranty covers corrosion-related parts for
2 years/24,000 miles, plus 8 years/80,000 miles on the catalytic converter and any
on-board diagnostic device. The Passenger Restraint Warranty covers seat belts
and airbags for 5 years/50,000 miles.
