2007 Isuzu Ascender Review
Isuzu's SUV loses its seven-passenger versions and available V8 engine for 2007. Ascender is a retrimmed Chevrolet TrailBlazer/GMC Envoy; the GM versions also offer only five-passenger models for '07. Ascender is available with rear-wheel drive or with 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes low-range gearing. The sole powertrain teams a 291-hp 6-cyl engine with a 4-speed automatic transmission. ABS and traction/antiskid control with rollover sensors are standard. Curtain side airbags are optional. Available OnStar assistance is dropped for 2007, but power-adjustable pedals remain among the options. Ascender's performance and accommodations mirror those of comparably equipped Envoys.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Larger than Compact SUVs, Midsize SUVs offer a mix of car- and truck-type construction, V6 and V8 power, and up to eight-passenger seating. This class also includes crossover vehicles.

Our Best Buy choice is the Honda Pilot. Our Recommended picks are the Ford Explorer, Ford Freestyle, Mazda CX-7, Nissan Murano, and Toyota Highlander.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Dodge Nitro, Ford Edge, GMC Acadia, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mazda CX-7, Mazda CX-9, Saturn Outlook, Suzuki XL-7, and Toyota FJ Cruiser.
News
We hear Ascender may offer a light-duty diesel engine for 2008, probably a 6-cyl unit. We also hear this SUV will be dropped along with its GM-brand cousins during or after the 2009 model year. That's bad news for the few Isuzu dealers still catering to retail buyers, as the brand's only other products, the i-series pickups, are said to get the axe by model-year 2010, perhaps '09.
