2007 Infiniti G35 Full Review
Date Published: 3/27/08
2007 Infiniti G35 Review
Infiniti revamps its lowest-priced sedan for 2007, giving it more power and new styling inside and out. The coupe version of the G35 continues in its 2003-2006 form for '07. Both the G35 sedan and coupe have rear-wheel drive; the sedan is also available as the all-wheel drive G35x. All use a 3.5-liter V6 and a 5-speed automatic transmission or 6-speed manual. Sedans have 306 hp, up from a top of 298 in the '06s. Coupes have 293 hp with manual transmission, 275 hp with automatic. The G35x comes only with automatic transmission. Its AWD includes a Snow Mode that locks in a 50/50 front/rear power split.

Sedans offer base, Journey, G35x, and Sport models. The coupe comes in a single trim level. All have ABS, traction/antiskid control, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags; the coupe's curtain bags cover front seats only. Standard features include leather upholstery and bi-xenon headlights. A limited-slip differential and sport suspension are included with Sport sedans and manual-transmission coupes; they're optional for automatic-transmission coupes. Sport sedans and coupes with sport suspension offer versions of Infiniti's active steer system designed to improve handling. The sedan's Navigation Package has a navigation system, voice recognition, and a 9.5-gigabyte hard drive for storing music files. Navigation is a stand-alone coupe option. Keyless entry/starting is standard on all but manual-transmission coupes.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Midsize Cars sport interior dimensions similar to Midsize Cars. Premium Midsize Cars offer more luxury, performance, and prestige when compared to Midsize Cars. This segment is one of the industry's fastest-growing categories.

Our Best Buys include the Acura TL, Infiniti M, and Lexus ES 350. Our Recommended picks are the Cadillac CTS, Infiniti G35, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Lexus GS 450h, Lincoln MKZ, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
News
At a glance, the updated G35 sedans look like the previous models, but they do, in fact, wear different exterior sheetmetal on the same basic platform. A similarly cautious reskinning will mark the 2008 G35 coupe, currently scheduled for release next spring. The sedans' new powered-up, reengineered V6 will be a highlight.

The G35 sedan is sold in Japan as the Nissan Skyline. The Skyline GT-R is a high-performance sports coupe with its own architecture, a turbocharged V6, and all-wheel drive. Last offered in 2003, the GT-R has long been a performance icon in Europe and Japan. It's also familiar to some younger U.S. enthusiasts from popular video games like "Gran Turismo." An all-new GT-R is coming to the U.S. with the Nissan badge, a decision that rankled Infiniti dealers who felt the car deserved to be sold through the upscale U.S. channel. In any case, it's reportedly due here for 2008 or '09 with up to 400 hp and a base price likely north of $50,000.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

AWD sdn Sport sdn, w/Prem. Pkg., man. Sport sdn, w/active steer sys., auto. Base cpe, man. Class Average
7 8 8 8 7

Eager V6 satisfies at any speed. Passing maneuvers a breeze. Automatic transmission generally smooth, but intermittent delay in downshifting annoys in around-town driving. Manual-transmission models a bit quicker, helped by precise shift action, however heavy clutch effort hampers smooth city driving.
Fuel Economy

AWD sdn Sport sdn, w/Prem. Pkg., man. Sport sdn, w/active steer sys., auto. Base cpe, man. Class Average
4 4 4 4 4.6

Test Sport sedan with automatic-transmission averaged 18.6 mpg. Test AWD sedan averaged 19.7 in mostly highway driving. Extended-use AWD sedan averaging 19.6 mpg over its first 9003 miles. A G35 Sport sedan with manual transmission averaged 17.1 mpg in city/highway work. Infiniti recommends premium-grade fuel for all G35s.
Ride Quality

AWD sdn Sport sdn, w/Prem. Pkg., man. Sport sdn, w/active steer sys., auto. Base cpe, man. Class Average
6 6 6 3 6.6

All are taut, stable, helped by longish wheelbases, solid structures. No bounding or float, but large bumps occasionally pound through. Some jiggle on broken surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

AWD sdn Sport sdn, w/Prem. Pkg., man. Sport sdn, w/active steer sys., auto. Base cpe, man. Class Average
8 8 8 8 7.2

G35 sedan is a near match for targeted BMW 3-Series, though the BMW has an edge in high-speed stability, steering feedback. All G35s are grippy, agile, with little lean in corners. Sport sedan's available Four Wheel Active Steer System provides even sharper moves, though steering boost at low speeds inconsistent. Braking is strong, though some testers found pedal too sensitive.
Quietness

AWD sdn Sport sdn, w/Prem. Pkg., man. Sport sdn, w/active steer sys., auto. Base cpe, man. Class Average
6 6 6 3 6.9

Engine note lusty in rapid acceleration, a background baritone at cruise. Road noise evident on coarse surfaces, especially with available 18- and 19-inch tires. Wind noise moderate in coupes, lower in sedans.
Controls

AWD sdn Sport sdn, w/Prem. Pkg., man. Sport sdn, w/active steer sys., auto. Base cpe, man. Class Average
7 7 7 7 6.8

Coupe or sedan, cabin generally well-designed, though control layout has some small buttons, takes some acclimation. Sedans have 7-inch dashboard screen with or without navigation, and many functions work through controls mounted horizontally below the screen. Coupe's navigation screen pops up from the dashtop. Main gauge cluster moves with tilt steering wheel, but steering wheel rim may block full view of gauges for some drivers. Cabin assembly quality, most interior materials on target for the class. Sedans are a step up from coupes, with rich wood or aluminum trim. Coupes have more evident plastic. One test AWD sedan suffered an intermittent buzz from the dash top.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

AWD sdn Sport sdn, w/Prem. Pkg., man. Sport sdn, w/active steer sys., auto. Base cpe, man. Class Average
8 8 8 6 7.4

Good room in sedans, though tallest drivers may desire more head and leg room. Seats in Sport models have additional side bolstering to keep occupants planted in fast cornering. Coupe has special driver seat with softer cushion, though its more prominent side bolsters can interfere with arm movement when shifting manual transmission. Coupe with sunroof snug for six-footers, and seatbelts require annoying stretch to reach. Visibility good in sedans, very confined aft in coupes.
Room/Comfort (rear)

AWD sdn Sport sdn, w/Prem. Pkg., man. Sport sdn, w/active steer sys., auto. Base cpe, man. Class Average
6 6 6 3 5.4

Sedans have above-average head and leg room. Well-contoured bench, if a bit short say some testers. Limited width, minimal toe room, and driveline hump thwart uncrowded three-abreast travel. Coupe's front seats power forward and back to ease entry/exit, but some twisting still required. Coupe's body design limits head room for taller passengers, but leg room is surprisingly good.
Cargo Room

AWD sdn Sport sdn, w/Prem. Pkg., man. Sport sdn, w/active steer sys., auto. Base cpe, man. Class Average
4 4 4 2 4.2

Sedan's trunk is large for the class. Lid hinges don't intrude, but narrow opening won't swallow larger objects. Standard center pass-through, but no folding seatbacks. Coupe seatback does fold, but opening to trunk is quite small. Interior small-item storage space just fair.
Value within Class

AWD sdn Sport sdn, w/Prem. Pkg., man. Sport sdn, w/active steer sys., auto. Base cpe, man. Class Average
8 7 7 5 6.1

These Infinitis lack the brand prestige of rivals from Audi, BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes. They don't quite match them for quietness or refinement, either. But their performance, space, and available all-wheel drive make them good alternatives. These virtues, teamed with prices that undercut those rivals, earn the G35 Recommended status.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

From The Back Seat
Chuck Giametta Going by list prices and not including destination charges, you'd pay $42,270 for a comparably equipped BMW 328Xi (230 hp) or $41,790 for an Audi A4 3.2 quattro (255 hp). Our long-term G35X lists for $38,200, has 306 hp, and the dynamic poise, useful features, and enough room and comfort to be a dead-serious alternative to those two top competitors. Only drivers super sensitive to the nuances of suspension design and snobs who put brand prestige ahead of all else would not consider the G35X a bargain for which no excuses are required.

Chuck Giametta With nearly 4500 miles under its belt, our extended-use G35X remains a solid, entertaining sedan. Acceleration and all-around handling and control continue to impress. No serious vices have emeged. However, the occasions in which the gearshift has trouble disengaging from Park seem more frequent. And the idle quality has grown gruff and vibratory.

Chuck Giametta A suspension that allows sharp pavement ridges to jar the G35X's occupants is the only thing keeping this sporty sedan out of our Best Buy circle. And even that might be forgiven considering all the quality, performance, four-season traction, and sophisticated good looks you get for a very reasonable $38,000. Let the debate begin.

David Hogan Body panels line up perfectly. Paint is deep and glossy, and virtually free of orange peel. The G35x is a sports car disguised as a reasonably practical 4-door sedan. Given the car's numerous strong points, it's a good value for the class.

David Hogan Body panels line up perfectly. Paint is deep and glossy, and virtually free of orange peel. The G35x is sports car disguised as a reasonably practical 4-door sedan. Given the car's numerous strong points, it's a good value for the class.

Ed Piotrowski Playing in the premium-midsize-car class is a tall order for any automaker. In just a few short years, Infiniti has created a car that can go toe-to-toe with the benchmark BMW 3-Series while undercutting it on price. G35 is immensely satisfying to drive and should be near the top of any entry-level luxury buyer's shopping list.

Jennifer Geiger I've long ago added G35 to my imaginary garage of vehicles. It continues to impress for its even blend of sport and luxury, flawless and classy interior, and competition-besting price.

John Biel As optioned with--among other things--a navigation system and satellite radio, this AWD sedan still came in delivered for somewhat less than $40,000, so it seems to be a worthy consideration for shoppers in this class. Power, comfort, and handling won't disappoint.

Matt Jaster Though I'm just now being introduced to some of these premium midsize cars, I was impressed with the G35 for several reasons, most importantly, what you get for what you're paying for. BMW and Audi don't have to worry just yet, but this car proves Infiniti is a nice budget-friendly alternative.

Sikora Don In a class filled with great choices, the Infiniti G35x easily deserves to be on any shopper's must-see list.

Tom Appel The G35 has matured past being measured against the BMW 3-Series. It is a legitimate premium sports sedan with a character all its own. Where a 3-Series sedan is a willing driving partner, the G35 is more animated, chomping at the bit rather than doing precisely what it's told. For driving precision, the BMW is still top dog, but for edgy fiestiness the Infiniti gets my nod. Without apologies, the G35 is not like the 3-Series, but it is absolutely worth test driving.
