2007 Hyundai Veracruz Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2007 Hyundai Veracruz Review
Hyundai introduces a larger SUV for 2007, a car-type midsize with seven-passenger seating. Veracruz is about 4 inches longer in wheelbase and 6 inches longer overall than Hyundai's Santa Fe SUV. Veracruz comes in GLS, SE, and Limited trims. All are available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. The sole powertrain teams a 260-horsepower V6 engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission. ABS and traction/antiskid control are standard. So too are front side airbags and curtain side airbags that cover all seating rows. The 3rd-row seat is a two-person 50/50 split bench that folds into the floor. The 2nd row seats three and also folds. Leather upholstery with heated front seats is standard on Limited, optional on SE. DVD entertainment is available on SE and Limited. Power adjustable pedals and a power tilt/telescope steering wheel are Limited-exclusive options. This evaluation is based on preview test drives.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

2WD GLS AWD Limited w/Ult. Pkg. Class Average
5 5 5.2

A bit slow from a stop, Veracruz has acceptable power once underway. Transmission occasionally slow to downshift for passing and merging, but its manual shift gate helps. No noticeable difference in acceleration between 2WD and AWD models. Maximum towing capacity is 3500 lb.
Fuel Economy

2WD GLS AWD Limited w/Ult. Pkg. Class Average
5 4 4

No opportunity to measure. Veracruz uses regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

2WD GLS AWD Limited w/Ult. Pkg. Class Average
6 6 5.5

Comfortable and carlike over most road surfaces. Few unwanted body motions over washboard and cracked pavement. Little difference in ride quality between GLS with its 17-inch tires and Limited with 18s.
Steering/Handling/Braking

2WD GLS AWD Limited w/Ult. Pkg. Class Average
4 4 4.5

Suspension tuning favors ride quality over sharp handling response. Body lean apparent in even moderate cornering, and steering lacks road feel. Still, Veracruz never feels unstable, even on slick roads. Brakes have adequate stopping control, pedal feel.
Quietness

2WD GLS AWD Limited w/Ult. Pkg. Class Average
7 7 5.6

Rivals many premium SUVs for hushed travel. Engine makes classy growl while accelerating, is nearly silent while cruising. Some wind rush, coarse-surface tire thrum noticed but are hardly intrusive.
Controls

2WD GLS AWD Limited w/Ult. Pkg. Class Average
8 8 6.6

Easy-read gauges and large, handy controls have classy blue backlighting at night. Ample use of textured, soft-touch materials creates very pleasing interior ambience. Note that a navigation system is unavailable, but Hyundai says it will offer one in the future.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

2WD GLS AWD Limited w/Ult. Pkg. Class Average
6 7 7

Good head room, but inadequate rearward seat travel will cramp tall occupants. Steering wheel tilts/telescopes on all, is power operated with Limited models' Ultimate Package. That package also includes power-adjustable pedals, allowing for fine tuning of comfortable driving position. Seats could use slightly more lateral support, but are long-haul comfortable. Limited's available two-tone leather upholstery particularly supple. Visibility a bit pinched to rear corners, fine otherwise.
Room/Comfort (rear)

2WD GLS AWD Limited w/Ult. Pkg. Class Average
6 6 6.1

Second-row seats slide and recline, providing good head, leg, and knee room even with front seats fully aft. Access to 3rd row requires some twisting, but bench is not hostile to adults if 2nd-row seat isn't all the way back. Otherwise, 3rd row best left to kids.
Cargo Room

2WD GLS AWD Limited w/Ult. Pkg. Class Average
7 7 8

Grocery-bag room behind 3rd-row seat. It folds flat and in one motion to open a larger cargo hold. Second-row also folds easily but isn't quite flush with the floor. Interior storage limited to small glovebox, center console, and door map pockets.
Value within Class

2WD GLS AWD Limited w/Ult. Pkg. Class Average
5 4 5.9

Veracruz shines for its refined powertrain, hushed cabin, and upscale interior decor. With a focus on serene cruising, its handling isn't as responsive as most rivals. Pricing for base models is competitive, but convenience features such as power-adjustable pedals are only available on top-end models as part of costly option packages that can drive prices beyond $38,000. At that point, Veracruz is a less-compelling alternative than the more well-rounded Honda Pilot, larger Saturn Outlook, or Hyundai's own less costly Santa Fe.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
