2007 Hyundai Entourage Full Review
Date Published: 6/26/08
2007 Hyundai Entourage Review
Hyundai's first minivan carries seven passengers and has a 3rd-row seat that folds into a floorwell. Entourage shares its design with the Kia Sedona; Hyundai is Kia's corporate parent. Entourage has a 250-hp V6 and a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift gate. GLS, SE, and Limited trim levels are offered. The 2nd-row bucket seats slide fore and aft and can be removed. The 3rd-row bench is split 60/40. ABS and traction/antiskid control are standard. Also standard are front side airbags and curtain side airbags that cover all three seating rows. All models have power windows in their sliding side doors. Dual power sliding side doors are standard on SE and Limited. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power tailgate are standard on Limited. Also available are a sunroof, DVD entertainment, power-adjustable pedals, and rear obstacle detection.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

GLS SE Class Average
5 5 4.8

Entourage and Sedona strong from a stop--a brisk 8.4 sec 0-60 mph in our tests. But rolling acceleration can seem sluggish, the automatic transmission being sometimes slow to downshift for extra power. It isn't always quick to follow manual gear changes, either.
Fuel Economy

GLS SE Class Average
4 4 4.1

Test Entourages, Sedonas averaged 16.5-18.1 in mix of city/highway driving, 19.2-22.7 mpg in with more highway driving. Test Sedona averaged 16.1 mpg in mostly city use, including gas-eating acceleration tests. Hyundai and Kia recommend premium-grade fuel for Entourage and Sedona.
Ride Quality

GLS SE Class Average
6 6 6

Comfortable for a minivan, but not quite carlike. Smooths out small bumps well. Generally composed, but bounces some over larger humps. Entourage SE and Limited, Sedona EX have 17-inch tires that make ride a bit more jiggly over rippled pavement.

Steering/Handling/Braking

GLS SE Class Average
5 5 4.7

Typical for a large minivan: never nimble, marked body lean in turns. Handling not noticeably improved with 17-inch tires. Steering nicely weighted, but feels numb. Traction/antiskid control a welcome standard feature.
Quietness

GLS SE Class Average
6 6 5.9

Engine emits full-throttle growl, is reasonably quiet otherwise. Tire thrum, some body rumble noticed even in town driving. Wind rush joins in at highway speeds. Some test examples of both Entourage and Sedona annoyed with creaking interior panels, rattling 2nd- and 3rd-row seats.
Controls

GLS SE Class Average
6 6 6.2

Entourage, Sedona share a dashboard with large, unobstructed gauges and clearly marked, nicely sized, easy-to-reach controls. Standard three-zone climate control an upscale touch. Cabin short on soft-touch surfaces, long on nondescript plastics, but materials mostly in line with price.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

GLS SE Class Average
7 7 6.9

Comfortable chair-height seats. Ample head room. Lanky drivers may want more rearward seat travel, though. Easy ingress/egress. Thick windshield pillars can impede visibility to front corners, but clear sight lines elsewhere. Like some rivals, Entourage and Sedona have a flip-down center tray table that's handy, but lets items slide around a lot.
Room/Comfort (rear)

GLS SE Class Average
7 7 6.9

Comfortable 2nd-row seats offer adult-size head and leg room even with front seats fully back. Tight 3rd row is adult-comfortable for short trips. Note that power sliding side doors are standard on Entourage SE and Limited, and available on the Sedona only as an EX-model option. Power or manual, some testers say sliding doors don't open wide enough for best rear entry/exit. Bulk of folded 2nd-row seats hampers access to 3rd row. Standard power sliding-door windows a fresh-air plus.
Cargo Room

GLS SE Class Average
10 10 10

Deep well behind 3rd-row seat a useful cargo hold; seat sections fold into it easily. Second-row seats tumble and fold for generous load volume. They can also be removed, but weigh 60 lb each. Plenty of cubbies for small items.
Value within Class

GLS SE Class Average
7 8 6.3

Entourage and the Kia Sedona that shares its design don't run with our Best Buy minivans in terms of ride quality, powertrain response, or squeak-free construction. But they earn Recommended status for matching the class leaders in size, utility, and standard safety features. Warranty coverage is impressive, and they beat every comparably equipped rival on price.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

From The Back Seat
Ed Piotrowski Entourage and by extension, Sedona, don't quite match the sophistication of the Honda Odyseey or Toyota Sienna. But they offer a lot of safety and convenience features for the money, which makes them worthy of consideration. The domestics now have yet another hurdle in their way if they want to compete in the minivan arena.

John Biel The Entourage's room, power, and price are all to the good for budget minivan buyers, but this tester was dismayed by its fuel economy and increasingly annoyed by the squeaky interior.

Tom Appel While domestic makers are slapping $4000 rebates on their aging minivans, Hyundai/Kia are refining the concept. There is nothing new here conceptually, but Entourage and Kia's similar Sedona offer better powertrains, higher-quality interior bits, and bargain pricing. Toss in the impressive warranty coverage, and what's not to like?
