2007 Hyundai Azera Full Review
Date Published: 6/26/08
2007 Hyundai Azera Review
A new base trim level is a late model-year-2007 addition to Hyundai's flagship sedan lineup. The Azera GLS joins SE and Limited models. GLS has a 234-hp 3.3-liter V6 engine borrowed from Hyundai's Sonata sedan. SE and Limited have a 263-hp 3.8-liter V6. All Azeras use a 5-speed automatic transmission. ABS and traction/antiskid control are standard. So are front and rear side airbags and curtain side airbags. Also included are a 60/40 split folding rear seat and dual-zone climate control. Leather upholstery and heated front seats are standard on Limited, available on SE. A sunroof is optional. A navigation system is unavailable.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Midsize Cars represent the heart of the U.S. car market. Most are price-sensitive, conservatively designed, family oriented sedans and wagons.

Our Best Buys include Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Our Recommended picks are the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Mercury Milan, and Saturn Aura.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Saturn Aura.
News
A new entry-level model is joining the Azera line. Tagged GLS, it has fewer standard frills than the SE, the previous base version, and uses a 3.3-liter V6 borrowed from Hyundai's smaller Sonata sedan. A 5-speed automatic is the only transmission. The GLS starts at $24,895, some $1300 below a comparable SE, which now becomes the midline Azera. Incidentally, the SE picks up standard 17-inch wheels and optional leather upholstery as running changes, while the Limited offers a new high-power Infinity audio option. Look for a navigation system to be available for the 2008 models. Otherwise, this Hyundai should see no major change for a while.

Azera's platform reportedly serves a new sport wagon patterned on the recent Portico concept, which is rather like the Chrysler Pacifica in size and format. Look for it as a 2009 addition. Sources mention a 120.9-inch wheelbase, 197-inch overall length, and seating for six or seven. The engine is likely to be Azera's 3.8-liter V6, perhaps tuned for more power. No word yet on name, it won't be Portico, says Hyundai. More news as we get it, so keep checking back with us.

Meantime, Hyundai is poised to add a rear-wheel-drive V8 sedan pitched above the Azera, but priced from well under $30,000, says one executive. This new flagship--the first rear-drive Hyundai to be sold in North America--should be all but identical to the Genesis concept unveiled at this year's New York Auto Show. It may even use that name. The concept looks much like a BMW 5-Series and is similar in size, measuring 197 inches long by 73.3 inches wide and 58.7 inches high on a 115.6-inch wheelbase. A new Hyundai-designed "Tau" V8 gives the concept over 300 horsepower, delivered via a 6-speed automatic transmission. In this form, 0-60 mph takes less than 6 seconds, Hyundai says, though the V8 can apparently be made larger or smaller than the concept's version to suit different markets and/or price points. Hyundai also says Genesis is structurally stiffer than a 5-Series or Mercedes E-Class sedan. The showroom model is likely to come with eight airbags, radar-based cruise control, navigation system, bi-xenon headlamps, and no doubt much more. We should have further details soon, so keep checking back with us.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

SE Limited Class Average
7 7 5.9

Refined 3.8-liter V6 furnishes snappy takeoffs, aided by responsive automatic transmission. Test Limited did 6.2 sec 0-60 mph. Manual shift gate useful for hill-and-dale driving. No opportunity to test GLS.
Fuel Economy

SE Limited Class Average
5 5 5.1

Test Azeras averaged 19.9-21.5 mpg in city/highway driving, 24.0 in mostly highway use. Azera uses regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

SE Limited Class Average
6 6 6.1

Mimics plush feel of impressive Toyota Avalon, but is harsher over small bumps, and falls well short of all-around composure with excessive wallow, float on uneven surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

SE Limited Class Average
6 6 6.2

Corners with decent grip, modest body lean, and positive, but light, steering feel. Standard traction/antiskid control a peace-of-mind plus. Strong brakes are easily modulated.
Quietness

SE Limited Class Average
7 7 6.2

Coarse-surface tire thrum noticed, but never annoys. Wind rush rises with speed, but doesn't intrude much either. V6 emits raspy growl at full throttle, is otherwise hushed. One test car's suspension made an occasional clunking noise.
Controls

SE Limited Class Average
7 7 6.7

Logical, stylish dashboard puts large, clearly marked gauges and controls within easy view and reach. Steering wheel masks dashboard ignition switch, but includes buttons for audio and climate systems. Attractive cabin materials not quite Lexus level, but enough padded surfaces, careful detailing to belie Azera's price. Some buyers may pine for a navigation system; Hyundai says it will offer one in the future.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

SE Limited Class Average
7 8 6.8

Plentiful leg room. Head room ample despite relatively high-set seats, which combine with lowish dashtop and large windows for fine all-around visibility. Driving position easily tailored with standard power seat, tilt/telescope steering wheel, Limited's optional power-adjustable pedals. Seats nicely contoured for good overall support.
Room/Comfort (rear)

SE Limited Class Average
7 7 5.1

Adult-friendly knee and head room, plus good foot space. Legs aren't crowded with front seats pushed well back, but three grown-ups may be a squeeze. No-sweat entry/exit.
Cargo Room

SE Limited Class Average
5 5 4.8

Trunk not huge, but efficiently shaped, easily accessed, expandable via standard fold-down rear seatbacks. Covered sickle-shaped trunklid hinges sit well outboard, steal little cargo space. Good cabin storage, with large bi-level console bin and front-seatback pockets offsetting small door map pockets.
Value within Class

SE Limited Class Average
7 7 6.3

Azera delivers an eye-opening array of standard safety features while furnishing impressive room, refinement, amenities, and build quality. Indifferent handling and ride control let it down, but overall, this Hyundai stacks up well against such rivals as the Buick LaCrosse.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
