ACCELERATION
| SE | Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 5.9 |
Refined 3.8-liter V6 furnishes snappy takeoffs, aided by responsive automatic transmission. Test Limited did 6.2 sec 0-60 mph. Manual shift gate useful for hill-and-dale driving. No opportunity to test GLS.
FUEL ECONOMY
| SE | Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5.1 |
Test Azeras averaged 19.9-21.5 mpg in city/highway driving, 24.0 in mostly highway use. Azera uses regular-grade fuel.
RIDE QUALITY
| SE | Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.1 |
Mimics plush feel of impressive Toyota Avalon, but is harsher over small bumps, and falls well short of all-around composure with excessive wallow, float on uneven surfaces.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| SE | Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.2 |
Corners with decent grip, modest body lean, and positive, but light, steering feel. Standard traction/antiskid control a peace-of-mind plus. Strong brakes are easily modulated.
QUIETNESS
| SE | Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6.2 |
Coarse-surface tire thrum noticed, but never annoys. Wind rush rises with speed, but doesn't intrude much either. V6 emits raspy growl at full throttle, is otherwise hushed. One test car's suspension made an occasional clunking noise.
CONTROLS
| SE | Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6.7 |
Logical, stylish dashboard puts large, clearly marked gauges and controls within easy view and reach. Steering wheel masks dashboard ignition switch, but includes buttons for audio and climate systems. Attractive cabin materials not quite Lexus level, but enough padded surfaces, careful detailing to belie Azera's price. Some buyers may pine for a navigation system; Hyundai says it will offer one in the future.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| SE | Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 8 | 6.8 |
Plentiful leg room. Head room ample despite relatively high-set seats, which combine with lowish dashtop and large windows for fine all-around visibility. Driving position easily tailored with standard power seat, tilt/telescope steering wheel, Limited's optional power-adjustable pedals. Seats nicely contoured for good overall support.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| SE | Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 5.1 |
Adult-friendly knee and head room, plus good foot space. Legs aren't crowded with front seats pushed well back, but three grown-ups may be a squeeze. No-sweat entry/exit.
CARGO ROOM
| SE | Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 4.8 |
Trunk not huge, but efficiently shaped, easily accessed, expandable via standard fold-down rear seatbacks. Covered sickle-shaped trunklid hinges sit well outboard, steal little cargo space. Good cabin storage, with large bi-level console bin and front-seatback pockets offsetting small door map pockets.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| SE | Limited | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6.3 |
Azera delivers an eye-opening array of standard safety features while furnishing impressive room, refinement, amenities, and build quality. Indifferent handling and ride control let it down, but overall, this Hyundai stacks up well against such rivals as the Buick LaCrosse.
