2007 GMC Sierra 1500 Full Review
Date Published: 5/06/08
2007 GMC Sierra 1500 Review
GMC's full-size pickup is redesigned for 2007 with fresh styling, more power, and new features. It is similar to Chevrolet's Silverado, also redesigned for '07.

Sierras are unchanged in wheelbase, but are 3 inches longer overall and 1.5 inches wider. Regular, extended, and crew cab body styles return. Extendeds have rear-hinged back doors that don't open independently of the fronts, but now open wider than before. Extendeds and crews include a three-person rear bench seat and are available with front bucket seats or a bench; regular cabs come only with a bench. Regular cabs can be equipped with a 6.5- or 8.1-ft cargo bed. Crews have a 5.8-ft bed. Extendeds are offered in all three bed lengths. Two distinct interiors are offered; GMC calls them "Pure Pickup" and "Luxury Inspired." Available engines, depending on cab/bed configuration, are a 195-hp V6, or V8s of 295, 315, and 367 hp. All V8s gain power for 2007, and some are capable of using E85 ethanol fuel and feature GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation. A 4-speed automatic transmission is standard; a manual transmission is no longer offered. Rear-wheel drive is standard. Two 4WD systems are available: a basic setup that should not be left engaged on dry pavement and GM's Autotrac that can. Both include low-range gearing.

Sierra is offered in Work, SLE, and SLT trims that correspond to similar versions of Chevy's Silverado. Unique to GMC is the top-line Sierra Denali crew cab, which comes in rear- or all-wheel drive with a 400-hp V8, 6-speed automatic transmission, distinct trim, and added standard features.

Standard on all models are ABS and, for '07, OnStar assistance. Newly available on select models are curtain side airbags, traction control, and an antiskid system with rollover sensors. Also newly available are a power-sliding rear window, remote engine start, navigation system, power-adjustable pedals, rear obstacle detection, and power rear side windows for extended cabs.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large Pickup Trucks are traditionally the vehicles of choice for heavy-duty hauling and towing. They offer an array of cab styles and bed lengths and usually feature powerful V8 or diesel engines. For personal use, consider light-duty half-ton models. For heavy-duty or commercial use, consider three-quarter- or one-ton models.

We have no Best Buys in this class. Our Recommended picks are the Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Classic, Ford F-150, and GMC Sierra 1500 Classic.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Toyota Tundra.
News
The redesigned Sierras and Chevrolet Silverados use the "GMT900" large-truck architecture introduced with the '07 GMC Yukon/Yukon XL SUVs and their relatives. A hybrid power option is planned for model-year 2008. The result of a GM-DaimlerChrysler-BMW collaboration, this "two-mode" system is said to use twin electric motors and a 300-volt battery pack to assist a 5.3 V8 with GM's Active Fuel Management. It allows low-speed driving on either power source, and promises better overall fuel economy than conventional powertrains.

Acceleration

6 6 6 7 5

Acceleration more than adequate with 5.3-liter V8 and robust with Denali's 6.2 V8. Smooth-shifting transmission kicks down quickly for more passing power. Tow/Haul mode adjusts shift points for best performance with heavy loads. Denali's shifter-stalk-mounted manual-shift control works with an easy flick of thumb.
Fuel Economy

4WD ext. cab w/Luxury int., nav sys., Z60 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z71 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z85 susp., 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
3 3 3 0 2.5

Test 4WD averaged 14.1 mpg. recommends regular-grade fuel for all engines except Denali's 400-hp V8, for which premium fuel is recommended.

Some 5.3-liter engines can also run on ethanol-blended fuel, called E85.
Ride Quality

4WD ext. cab w/Luxury int., nav sys., Z60 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z71 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z85 susp., 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
5 5 6 0 4.4

Standard Z85 suspension provides a comfortable, compliant ride, and there's less reverberation over bumps than in most pickups. Stiffer Z60 suspension makes ride more jittery over smaller bumps, partly due to its 20-inch tires vs. standard 17s. Available Z71 suspension is suited to off-road duty, exhibits some choppiness over pavement cracks and washboard surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

4WD ext. cab w/Luxury int., nav sys., Z60 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z71 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z85 susp., 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
4 3 3 0 3.5

Noticeable body lean in fast turns and quick changes of direction with Z85 suspension, but on par with most other full-size pickups. Z60 and Z71 suspension improve handling only slightly. Steering nicely weighted if a bit numb. Brakes responsive with fine pedal feel.
Quietness

4WD ext. cab w/Luxury int., nav sys., Z60 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z71 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z85 susp., 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
6 6 6 0 4.9

Road, engine noise lower than in most pickups. Wind noise intrudes only above 60 mph.
Controls

4WD ext. cab w/Luxury int., nav sys., Z60 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z71 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z85 susp., 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
7 7 7 0 6.3

Gauges easy to see and read. Pure Pickup interior places radio and climate controls high on dashboard, just out of easy reach. Materials better than expected of a work-oriented truck. Luxury interior mimics that in Yukon large SUV, with controls mounted lower but within easy reach, and materials that are a cut above the pickup norm, even though most surfaces are hard plastic. Optional navigation system absorbs some audio controls, but doesn't complicate their use.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

4WD ext. cab w/Luxury int., nav sys., Z60 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z71 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z85 susp., 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
9 9 9 0 8.3

Ample room for adults. Bucket and bench seats lack side support in fast turns, but are firm and comfortable. Visibility generally good, though extended cab's thick rear pillars hinder view to back corners. Short drivers may appreciate optional power-adjustable pedals.
Room/Comfort (rear)

4WD ext. cab w/Luxury int., nav sys., Z60 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z71 susp., 5.3 V8 4WD crew cab w/Pure Pickup int., Z85 susp., 5.3 V8 Denali Class Average
4 8 8 0 5

Generous head room. Leg room ample in crew cab. Extended cab's seatback set at a comfortable angle, but leg room tight. With front bucket seats, center console restricts toe room for center rear-seat passenger. Extended's rear doors are available with power windows. They now open wider than before--nearly flush with the cargo bed; for easier entry/exit, but if fully open, a seated passenger can't close the door.
Cargo Room

5 6 6 0 5.2

On both extended and crew cabs, rear seat cushion flips back against seatback, leaving a large cargo area with a nearly flat floor. Pure Pickup interior features upper and lower gloveboxes; Luxury interior has only a lower one. In front, bucket seats come with a roomy console bin, while the bench seat is available with a flip-down center armrest that doubles as a large storage bin. Otherwise, there are few other interior storage cubbies.

GMC's redesigned Sierra and the similar Chevrolet Silverado are among the best large pickup trucks for refinement and available features. Any truck buyer would be well-advised to give these Recommended picks a long, hard look.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
