Vehicle Highlights
GMC's compact pickup adds more power for 2007. Canyon shares its basic design and powertrain with the Chevrolet Colorado and Isuzu i-290/i-370. Canyon offers regular and extended cab body styles in Work, SL, and SLE trims. Crew Cabs are available as SLE only. All Canyons are available with rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive that includes low-range gearing but should not be left engaged on dry pavement. Most models come with a 4-cyl engine, but for '07, a 185-hp 2.9-liter replaces a 175-hp 2.8. Standard on 4WD Crew Cabs and optional on others is a 242-hp 3.7-liter 5-cyl engine that replaces a 220-hp 3.5 5-cyl. Manual or automatic transmission are available with both engines. Regulars cabs seat up to three. Extendeds have rear-hinged back doors and seat up to five with two rear jump seats. Crew Cabs have four conventional doors and seat up to six with a folding rear bench. Regular and extended cabs have a 6-ft bed, Crew Cabs a 5-ft bed. ABS is standard. Traction control is available on 2WDs and includes a limited-slip differential that is also optional on 4WDs. Curtain side airbags that cover all seating rows are optional. Off-road and sport suspensions are optional. Canyon's performance and accommodations mirror those of similarly equipped Colorados.
COMPETITION
Consumer GuideĀ® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Compact Pickups offer a true-truck design in a relatively modest package. They are best suited for personal or light-duty use rather than commercial use, heavy hauling, or towing.
Our Best Buy is the Toyota Tacoma. Our Recommended picks are the Dodge Dakota and Honda Ridgeline.
New or significantly redesigned is the Ford Explorer Sport Trac.
