2007 Ford Freestyle Review
Side airbags are standard instead of optional on 2007 versions of this car-type SUV. Freestyle is essentially a wagon version of the Ford Five Hundred sedan. Both share a basic architecture originated by Ford-owned Volvo. Freestyle comes in SEL and Limited models. Both are available with front-wheel drive or with all-wheel drive that lacks low-range gearing. The sole powertrain teams a 203-hp V6 with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). ABS is standard. Traction control is standard with AWD, optional with front-drive. No antiskid system is offered. Standard seating is for six and includes 2nd-row buckets and a 3rd-row bench that folds into a floorwell. An available 60/40 split folding 2nd-row bench increases capacity to seven. Freestyles have a fold-flat front passenger seatback. Front side airbags and curtain side airbags with rollover deployment are now standard; they had been optional. Among other available features: power-adjustable pedals, DVD entertainment, navigation system, and rear obstacle detection.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Larger than Compact SUVs, Midsize SUVs offer a mix of car- and truck-type construction, V6 and V8 power, and up to eight-passenger seating. This class also includes crossover vehicles.

Our Best Buy choice is the Honda Pilot. Our Recommended picks are the Ford Explorer, Ford Freestyle, Mazda CX-7, Nissan Murano, and Toyota Highlander.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Dodge Nitro, Ford Edge, GMC Acadia, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mazda CX-7, Mazda CX-9, Saturn Outlook, Suzuki XL-7, and Toyota FJ Cruiser.
News
Freestyle has dodged the hangman's noose and will return late this summer as a revised version called Taurus X. Besides the new name, the 2008 edition wears the Ford brand's three-bar grille and other styling changes. It also graduates to the 3.5-liter V6 and 6-speed automatic transmission used in Ford's new Edge crossover. The current 3.0 V6 and CVT are dropped. Ford hopes the name change will perk up buyer interest in what has been a sales disappointment so far. The same applies to the related Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego sedans, which respectively revive the Taurus and Sable names for '08. They, too, get the new powertrain, plus other updates.
