2007 Ford Focus Review
Ford's smallest car is largely unchanged for 2007. Focus comes as a 2-dr hatchback called the ZX3, and with four doors as the ZX4 sedan, ZX5 hatchback, and ZXW wagon. Price levels ascend through S, SE, SES, and ST designations. All have 4-cyl engines. The ST has 151 hp, the others have 136. The ZX3 S and sporty ZX4 ST sedan are manual transmission only. Other models offer manual or automatic. The ST has a sport suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes. It also includes ABS, which is optional on other models. Traction control is available for SE, SES, and ST versions. All Focuses include a height-adjustable driver seat and split folding rear seatbacks. Head- and torso-protecting front side airbags are available linewide. Other options include sunroof, leather upholstery, and heated front seats.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Compact Cars comprise popularly priced sedans, hatchbacks, and wagons with wheelbases 100 inches or longer.

Our Best Buys include the Honda Civic and Mazda 3. Our Recommended picks are the Chevrolet Cobalt, Ford Focus, and Mazda 5.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Sentra, Nissan Versa, and Pontiac G5.
News
Sources confirm the 2008 Focus will get modest styling and engineering updates on a largely unchanged vintage-2000 platform. The wagon body style may be dropped, but a 2-dr coupe, maybe a hatchback, will join the line. All models add the Ford brand's new three-bar grille theme, a full-length bodyside creaseline, and spruced-up interiors. Dimensions and powerteams will see little, if any change.

Like the similar make-do Focus freshening of 2005, this one reflects Ford Motor Company's continuing cash shortage. However, sources believe the North American Focus will share in a new-generation European platform that should be ready by early next decade--provided the company's current turnaround efforts succeed.

Ford is eyeing "B-class" vehicles to compete with small imports like Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris. Ford-owned Mazda reportedly contributes a basic design to be offered as a sedan (code-named B409), a 4-dr crossover wagon (B474) and a minivan (B475). The last is said to be due for model-year 2011, the others for 2010. All would be built in Mexico with shared underskin components, though appearance and some dimensions would differ among the three. Ford could also bring over one or more of its smaller European vehicles, suitably modified for the U.S. market, but this approach is considered less likely.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

ZX3 SES, auto. ZX5 SES, man. ZX4 ST Class Average
3 4 5 4.6

ST's 151-hp engine has adequate low-rpm power, immediate throttle response. Engine in other models has only adequate power for highway merging or ascending long grades. Automatic transmission dulls off-the-line snap. Manual transmission has smooth shift/clutch action.
Fuel Economy

ZX3 SES, auto. ZX5 SES, man. ZX4 ST Class Average
6 6 6 6.5

Test ST averaged 20.5 mpg in strictly city driving. No opportunity to measure with other models.
Ride Quality

ZX3 SES, auto. ZX5 SES, man. ZX4 ST Class Average
6 6 6 5.3

ST's sport suspension gives firm, but impressively compliant, ride. Other models somewhat softer, thump less over bumps, but also feel less stable at highway speed. No opportunity to evaluate with 15-inch tires.
Steering/Handling/Braking

ZX3 SES, auto. ZX5 SES, man. ZX4 ST Class Average
7 7 7 5.8

ST and SES variants have communicative steering, plus well-controlled body lean and good grip in fast turns. Braking strong, stable. Other models, with their softer suspensions, are a shade less nimble.
Quietness

ZX3 SES, auto. ZX5 SES, man. ZX4 ST Class Average
4 4 4 4.4

ST exhibits little road rumble, but tires slap intrusively over sharp ridges. Sporty exhaust note is loud in high-rpm driving. All models exhibit noticeable wind rush around front side windows.
Controls

ZX3 SES, auto. ZX5 SES, man. ZX4 ST Class Average
6 6 6 5.9

Well-arranged dashboard has easy-read gauges and mostly intuitive, handy minor controls. Good cabin materials and workmanship for the price.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

ZX3 SES, auto. ZX5 SES, man. ZX4 ST Class Average
5 5 5 5.6

Comfortable, supportive seats stand chair-height, yet head room outstanding. Leg space fine for class. ST and SES models include tilt/telescope steering wheel for extra measure of driver comfort. Large door openings ease entry/exit.
Room/Comfort (rear)

ZX3 SES, auto. ZX5 SES, man. ZX4 ST Class Average
3 4 4 4

Better head and leg room than most compacts, though sunroof's housing trims head space for tall riders. Entry/exit a squeeze on ZX3s, much easier on 4-dr models, though their rear doors should open wider.
Cargo Room

ZX3 SES, auto. ZX5 SES, man. ZX4 ST Class Average
7 7 3 4.8

Sedan's trunklid uses space-saving strut-type hinges. All models have generous cargo holds with low liftovers, plus split folding rear seatbacks for versatility. Available premium-stereo subwoofer eats up space, however. Abundant interior storage includes six-CD holder in dash and ceiling console in nonsunroof models.
Value within Class

ZX3 SES, auto. ZX5 SES, man. ZX4 ST Class Average
7 7 7 6

Focus is fun to drive in any form, though it lacks the refinement of the Volkswagen Jetta and the outright sportiness of the Mazda 3. It's also an aging design that makes do with head-protecting front side airbags rather than the curtain side airbags that are the norm in newer compacts. But Focus is priced to sell, and an array of body styles and useful options earn it Recommended status.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
NA = price note available, NC = no charge.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
