2007 Ford Five Hundred Review
Side airbags are standard instead of optional on 2007 versions of Ford's large sedan. Five Hundred shares its design with the Mercury Montego and Ford's Freestyle SUV. All use a platform originated by Ford-owned Volvo. Five Hundred comes with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and offers SEL and Limited models; SE models are dropped for 2007. The only engine is a 203-hp 3.0-liter V6. Front-drive models have a 6-speed automatic transmission. AWD models get a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). ABS is standard. Traction control is included with AWD, optional otherwise; no antiskid system is offered. Front side airbags and curtain side airbags with rollover deployment are now standard; they had been optional. All models include power driver seat and split folding rear seatbacks. Leather upholstery is standard on Limited, optional for SEL. DVD entertainment and a navigation system are available for both, and are joined for '07 by optional satellite radio. Sunroof and rear obstacle detection are also available.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large Cars comprise the biggest passenger sedans and wagons. Large, inside and out, they offer lots of metal for the money and are dominated by domestic brands.

Our Best Buys include Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Dodge Magnum. Our Recommended picks are the Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego.
News
The Five Hundred becomes a new Taurus for 2008 as Ford seeks desperately needed sales by returning to a better-known name. Other changes include the "three-bar" Ford-brand grille theme, an available 3.5-liter V6, and a 6-speed automatic transmission to replace the Five Hundred's CVT. Sales begin late this summer. Unlike the previous Taurus, which priced against the class-leading Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, the '08 is expected to come in somewhere between the Camry and Toyota's larger Avalon sedan. The related Mercury Montego also looks to the past for '08 in resurrecting the Sable name. It gets most of the Ford's other changes--and for the same reasons. The Ford Freestyle crossover, which is rebadged Taurus X, does too, but continues to share the basic sedan platform.
