2007 Ford Expedition Full Review
Date Published: 4/15/08
2007 Ford Expedition Review
Ford's largest SUV gains fresh front and rear styling and an extended-wheelbase model for 2007. The Expedition EL has a 12-inch-longer wheelbase than the regular-length model and is 14.8 inches longer overall. Both versions seat seven or eight with available three-place 2nd-row seating. An available front bench seat increases seating capacity to nine. The sole engine remains a 300-hp V8, but a 6-speed automatic transmission replaces a 4-speed automatic. All Expeditions offer a choice of rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive that can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes low-range gearing.

XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited trim levels are offered. All have ABS and Ford's AdvanceTrac antiskid system with rollover sensors. Also standard are curtain side airbags that cover all three seating rows and include rollover deployment. Standard for Eddie Bauer and Limited, and available for XLT is a power-folding 3rd-row seat. Options include a power liftgate, navigation system, and DVD entertainment. Lincoln's similarly revised '07 Navigator is a luxury version of Expedition with different styling, features, and pricing.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large SUVs are traditionally workhorse seven-plus passenger wagons with brawny truck-type chassis, ample towing ability, lots of cargo space, and generally poor fuel economy. These vehicles offer towing and payload ratings similar to large pickup trucks.

Our Best Buys include Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, and GMC Yukon and Denali. Our Recommended pick is the Ford Expedition.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, Ford Expedition, and GMC Yukon and Denali.
News
Expedition reportedly will follow its 2007 makeover with a larger V8 for 2009. It's said to be a 5.8-liter version of Ford Motor Company's new "Hurricane" family. F-150 pickups and Mustang GT cars will likely offer this size as well. A 6.2-liter version is rumored for Lincoln's big Navigator SUV and MK LT pickup, also for around 2009, but this might be optional for Expedition too.

Acceleration

4WD Limited w/nav. sys. 4WD Eddie Bauer EL w/nav. sys. 4WD Limited EL w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 6 5.8

Expedition and Navigator have sufficient power for any situation. Alert 6-speed automatic transmission always in correct gear. Test Expedition EL coped adequately with 5000-lb trailer over hilly terrain. Towing capacity is 9200 lb for Expedition, 8950 for Navigator.

Fuel Economy

4WD Limited w/nav. sys. 4WD Eddie Bauer EL w/nav. sys. 4WD Limited EL w/nav. sys. Class Average
2 2 2 2.7

Test Expedition 4WD EL averaged 13.4 mpg. Expedition and Navigator use regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

4WD Limited w/nav. sys. 4WD Eddie Bauer EL w/nav. sys. 4WD Limited EL w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 6 6.4

Both regular- and extended-length versions smooth, compliant over major road imperfections. Extended models slightly better settled over broken surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

4WD Limited w/nav. sys. 4WD Eddie Bauer EL w/nav. sys. 4WD Limited EL w/nav. sys. Class Average
4 4 4 3.7

Expedition, Navigator display impressive agility for large SUVs. Nicely weighted steering has natural feel. Relatively little lean in corners for a large truck. Except in close-quarters maneuvering, extended-length versions give up little to shorter regular-length models.
Quietness

4WD Limited w/nav. sys. 4WD Eddie Bauer EL w/nav. sys. 4WD Limited EL w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 7 6.5

Both Expedition and Navigator suffer surprising degree of wind rush from outside mirrors, but are otherwise impressively hushed. Little road noise over most surfaces. Engine vocal only in rapid acceleration.
Controls

4WD Limited w/nav. sys. 4WD Eddie Bauer EL w/nav. sys. 4WD Limited EL w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 6 6.4

Expedition has large, easy-to-read gauges. Navigator's retro design dictates smaller, fussier shapes. Dashboards otherwise similar, with most controls logically placed, though switchgear lacks precision feel. Navigation system absorbs most audio functions, awkwardly combines pushbutton and touch screen operation, and its screen washes out in even moderate sunlight. No opportunity to test without navigation system.

Plethora of hard plastic panels cheapens Expedition's interior ambiance, even with available leather upholstery. Luxuriously soft leather, real wood trim dresses up Navigator, but it is also let down by too much painted plastic and some unpadded surfaces--especially given its premium-class aspirations. Neither Expedition nor Navigator is available with a rearview camera, a useful feature offered on many competitors.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

4WD Limited w/nav. sys. 4WD Eddie Bauer EL w/nav. sys. 4WD Limited EL w/nav. sys. Class Average
9 9 9 8.7

Generous room, supportive seats. Driver positioning aided by power tilt steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals standard on Navigator, available on Expedition. In both SUVs, high step-in a likely obstacle for smaller occupants, though Navigator's available power running boards compensate some. Visibility hampered by thick roof pillars, large headrests, particularly over left shoulder.
Room/Comfort (rear)

4WD Limited w/nav. sys. 4WD Eddie Bauer EL w/nav. sys. 4WD Limited EL w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 8 8 7.7

No opportunity to test Expedition or Navigator with 2nd-row bench seat. Buckets too low to floor, a bit narrow for optimal comfort. High step in complicates entry/exit for smaller passengers. Buckets fold forward for impressive 3rd-row access. Third row accommodations among best of any SUV, with grown-up sized head and leg room on a chair-height bench, though three-adult seating best reserved for short trips.
Cargo Room

4WD Limited w/nav. sys. 4WD Eddie Bauer EL w/nav. sys. 4WD Limited EL w/nav. sys. Class Average
9 10 10 8.6

Second- and 3rd-row seatbacks fold flat into floor, creating vast storage area. Available power-folding 3rd row a convenience plus, works like a charm, and saves awkward stretching. Note that automatic liftgate lacks tailgate button for power close. Big glovebox, roomy center console, large door pockets provide abundant small-item storage.
Value within Class

4WD Limited w/nav. sys. 4WD Eddie Bauer EL w/nav. sys. 4WD Limited EL w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 8 8 7.6

Expedition is an excellent vehicle for those who genuinely need the power and space of a large truck-type SUV. Interior materials trail those of some competitors, but for useful power, cargo space, passenger room, and surprisingly adept handling, this Ford is a Recommended pick. Lincoln's Navigator dresses Expedition in flashier duds, and elevates cabin ambience with some real wood and nicer leather. The Lincoln offers nothing of substance over its Ford sibling, and Navigator costs more.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
