BMW introduced its first-ever hardtop convertible at the Detroit Auto Show. Available on the 2007 328i and 335i, the hardtop is a power-operated, three-piece steel unit that opens in just 22 seconds and folds into the trunk. The roof and luggage compartments are separate, so packages can't be crushed by the roof. When equipped with the optional Comfort Access feature, the top can be controlled by remote. The advantages of a steel hardtop instead of a cloth top are greater security and visibility. Compared to the last generation convertible, BMW says the new hardtop has 30-percent larger rear side windows and 38 percent better visibility to the rear.

BMW has put a lot of effort into making the convertible driving experience as comfortable as possible, adding a "Convertible" mode to the climate control system and offering sun reflective leather that can reduce surface temperatures on dark interior colors by as much as 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Like the rest of the 3-Series lineup, 328i models will have a 230-horsepower inline six-cylinder engine, while 335i models will boast a 300-horsepower, twin-turbocharged inline six.

Full pricing for the 2007 3-Series convertible wasn't made available, but BMW says the 328i convertible will start in the low $40,000 range. The new 3-Series droptops are scheduled to go on sale at the end of March.
