ACCELERATION

Touring Touring, 2.7 V6 Limited, 3.5 V6 Limited hardtop convertible Class Average
4 5 6 6 5.9

Four-cylinder Sebring struggles in passing and merging situations, though it copes adequately with around-town driving. The 2.7 V6 is stronger overall, though transmission shifts harshly. Power ample with 3.5-liter V6, but 6-speed's rough, delayed downshifts frustrate passing efforts.

FUEL ECONOMY

Touring Touring, 2.7 V6 Limited, 3.5 V6 Limited hardtop convertible Class Average
5 5 5 5 5.1

Touring sedans averaged 19.5 mpg with 4-cylinder, 21.0 with 2.7 V6. With 3.5-liter V6, test sedan averaged 22.5 mpg in mostly highway driving, test convertible averaged 18.3 with more city use. The 4-cylinder and 2.7 V6 use regular-grade fuel. Chrysler recommends 89-octane fuel for the 3.5 V6.

RIDE QUALITY

Touring Touring, 2.7 V6 Limited, 3.5 V6 Limited hardtop convertible Class Average
6 6 6 6 6.1

Good isolation from bumps and rough surfaces, but highway-speed stability compromised by excessive body float over dips and swells.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

Touring Touring, 2.7 V6 Limited, 3.5 V6 Limited hardtop convertible Class Average
5 5 5 5 6.2

Nimble at low speeds, but steering has less precise feel than that of most midsize competitors. Notable body lean in aggressive cornering. Brakes strong in simulated panic stops.

QUIETNESS

Touring Touring, 2.7 V6 Limited, 3.5 V6 Limited hardtop convertible Class Average
5 5 6 6 6.2

Road, wind noise effectively muted. Gruff 4-cylinder roars loudly during even moderate acceleration. 2.7 V6 modestly more refined. 3.5-liter V6 most hushed, but still trails most rivals' available V6s for overall polish.

CONTROLS

Touring Touring, 2.7 V6 Limited, 3.5 V6 Limited hardtop convertible Class Average
6 6 6 6 6.7

Gauges simple, though difficult to read at night. Climate controls set too low for quick adjustment. Available navigation system absorbs some audio functions, but its controls are fairly intuitive. Cabin materials more sturdy than rich, notably down market of class leaders. One test convertible suffered a malfunction that prevented closing the hardtop for nearly an hour. The problem resolved itself without a dealership visit.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

Touring Touring, 2.7 V6 Limited, 3.5 V6 Limited hardtop convertible Class Average
6 6 6 6 6.8

Generous head room, even beneath sunroof housing. Chrysler says Sebring's body is about as wide as other midsize sedans, but cabin width more on par with compact class. Shoulder room limited for larger occupants. Narrow roof pillars contribute to good outward visibility.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

Touring Touring, 2.7 V6 Limited, 3.5 V6 Limited hardtop convertible Class Average
4 4 4 2 5.1

Adult-adequate head room. No excess leg room. Fine seat support. Longish doors aid entry/exit. Narrow cabin rules out three-abreast adult seating.

CARGO ROOM

Touring Touring, 2.7 V6 Limited, 3.5 V6 Limited hardtop convertible Class Average
4 4 4 4 4.8

Short decklid, high liftover limit utility of small but usefully shaped trunk. Rear seats split 60/40, fold nearly flat. Load possibilities expanded by available flat-folding front passenger seat. Narrow center console and smallish glovebox compromise interior storage options.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

Touring Touring, 2.7 V6 Limited, 3.5 V6 Limited hardtop convertible Class Average
4 6 5 5 6.3

The redesigned 2007 Sebring is a vast improvement over the 2001-2006 generation, and prices are attractive, with well-equipped V6 models starting below $23,000. Unfortunately the '07 Sebring also lacks the powertrain refinement and interior roominess to merit serious consideration in this segment.
