Chrysler adds a long-wheelbase body style to this luxury-oriented sedan for 2007. 300 shares its underskin design with the Dodge Charger sedan and Magnum wagon. It comes in base, Touring, 300C, and 300C SRT8 models. All are available with rear-wheel drive. Touring and 300C models are also available with all-wheel drive. Optional for those models is the W.P. Chrysler Executive Series package that includes the long-wheelbase body. It adds 6 inches to wheelbase and to rear seat leg room. The base 300 has a 190-hp 2.7-liter V6, the Touring a 250-hp 3.5-liter V6. The 300C and SRT8 use 5.7- and 6.1-liter versions of Chrysler's Hemi V8, with 340 hp and 425 hp, respectively. Exclusive to the 5.7 V8 is Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System cylinder deactivation. The base 300 has a 4-speed automatic transmission; all others use a 5-speed automatic. The SRT8 has specific brakes and suspension. ABS and traction/antiskid control are optional on the base 300, standard otherwise. Curtain side airbags are optional, as are a cell phone link and DVD entertainment. Also new for '07 are available heated rear seats and adaptive cruise control.

News
We hear the 300 and counterpart Dodges will be "restyled and reengineered" for 2009, which likely means a full makeover. Also expected for Chrysler's LX-platform trio is more parts-sharing with the C- and E-Class lines at corporate cousin Mercedes-Benz. This is said to involve a new electronics "architecture" and, from model-year 2010, new "modular" V6 engines tuned to suit each brand.
Though a rumored 4-dr 300 convertible is apparently dead, Chrysler is still said to be mulling a luxury-class sedan patterned on the 2005 Imperial concept. Sources expect a decision by early 2007 and a possible introduction for model-year 2009. If approved, this car would be basically a stretched 300 with "neoclassic" lines a la Rolls-Royce. It would mark the Imperial nameplate's third resurrection since 1975.

Touring's 3.5 V6 adequately quick, even with AWD; Chrysler quotes 9.0 sec 0-60. 300C responsive at any speed; 6.3 sec 0-60, says Chrysler. Both transmissions suffer some lag before downshifting, but the 5-speed's manual shift gate helps. Cylinder-deactivation feature undetectable in test 300Cs. Brawny SRT8 lends credence to Chrysler's 5.0 sec 0-60 claim. We have not yet tested the extended-length 300.

Chrysler says Multi-Displacement System improves 300C by 2 mpg city, 5 mpg highway. Chrysler recommends 87-octane fuel for the 2.7 V6, 89 octane for the 3.5 V6 and 5.7 V8, 91 octane for SRT8.
