At the 2007 Chicago Auto Show, Volkswagen announced that it is resurrecting the R32, a "hot hatch" sibling of the Rabbit and GTI. Power comes from the same 3.2-liter VR6 engine that motivated the last R32, which was offered only in the 2004 model year. With 250 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, the R32 is capable of a 6.4-second 0-60 mph run. The lone transmission is VW's Direct Selection Gearbox, a clutchless manual transmission that can be shifted via steering wheel paddles or the shift lever. Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive and a sport suspension with a lowered stance are standard.

Visual performance cues include 18-inch wheels, a rear roof spoiler, and R32 badges. Bi-xenon headlights, ABS, and an antiskid system are standard. Inside, aluminum pedals and sport seats add to the performance feel. Like the 2004 model, the R32 will be offered in a limited-edition run of 5000. A 2008 model, the R32 is set to hit dealerships in August at a price of $32,990 plus destination. The only option will be a navigation system. Interested customers can pre-order their R32s at VW.com. In addition to the R32, VW announced a contingency fund for SCCA racing and showed the Volkswagen GTI Cup car, a race-prepped GTI that will be available for purchase or rental later in 2007 or in '08.
