Pontiac displayed an increased focus on rear-wheel-drive performance cars with the unveiling of the 2008 G8 show car at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show. The G8 is the first North American application of GM's new global rear-wheel-drive platform developed by Holden, GM's Australian subsidiary. Pontiac says production G8 models will hit dealerships in early 2008 in both G8 and G8 GT trim. Base G8s will be powered by a 261-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode.
G8 GTs will be powered by a 362-hp, 6.0-liter V8 mated to a six-speed automatic or optional six-speed manual transmission. Standard features on both models include antilock brakes, antiskid/traction control, front side airbags, and front and rear curtain side airbags. An optional sport package will be available for both models, adding such features as upgraded wheels and tires, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a rear wing spoiler. The G8 show car displayed at the Chicago show is representative of the forthcoming G8 GT production models, but with special non-production touches such as unique paint and interior trim, 20-inch wheels, and a lowered ride height. Pontiac did not announce pricing for the G8, but expect base models to start in the mid-$20,000 range.
