2007 Chevrolet Tahoe Full Review
Date Published: 7/10/08
2007 Chevrolet Tahoe Review
More power, fresh styling, and new features highlight the 2007 redesign of these large SUVs. Tahoe shares its basic design with the GMC Yukon and Denali and Cadillac Escalade. All three also come in extended-length versions; Tahoe's is called the Suburban. All these GM SUVs have more cargo space and rear passenger room than the 2000-2006 generation, despite little-changed exterior dimensions.

Tahoe comes in LS, LT, and luxury LTZ trim. Each offers rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive that can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes low-range gearing. ABS and traction/antiskid control with rollover sensors is standard.

A 295-hp 4.8-liter V8 is standard on the 2WD LS. A 320-hp 5.3-liter V8 is optional on that model and standard on all other Tahoes. The 5.3 V8 has GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation. The only transmission is a 4-speed automatic. Standard on LTZs is GM's Autoride suspension that includes load leveling and automatically adjusts firmness based on road and driving conditions. LT is also available with Chevy's Z71 Off-Road Suspension Package.

Passenger capacity ranges from five to nine, with two- and three-place seating available for any of the three rows. Standard with LTZ and available for LS and LT are curtain side airbags that cover all seating rows and include rollover deployment. The 2nd- and 3rd-row seats fold, and the 3rd row is removable. As in GM's other large SUVs, a spring release option flips the 2nd-row seats to provide 3rd row access. Other new features include a rearview camera, power liftgate, power running boards, and rear obstacle detection. Also available are a navigation system, power-adjustable pedals, heated 1st- and 2nd-row seats, and DVD entertainment. OnStar assistance is standard.

Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large SUVs are traditionally workhorse seven-plus passenger wagons with brawny truck-type chassis, ample towing ability, lots of cargo space, and generally poor fuel economy. These vehicles offer towing and payload ratings similar to large pickup trucks.

Our Best Buys include Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, and GMC Yukon and Denali. Our Recommended pick is the Ford Expedition.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Denali, and Ford Expedition.
News
It shouldn't be long before Tahoe (Suburban, too) exchanges its 4-speed automatic transmission for a newer 6-speed unit. The latter is already available in related Cadillac Escalades and some GMC Yukon/Yukon XL models.

An available hybrid powertrain looms as the main news for 2008. The result of a GM-DaimlerChrysler-BMW collaboration, this "two-mode" system is said to use twin electric motors and a 300-volt battery pack to assist a 5.3 V8 with GM's Active Fuel Management. It allows low-speed driving on either power source, and promises better overall fuel economy than conventional powertrains. Rival Dodge's midsize Durango SUV is expected to offer a similar hybrid setup during the '07 or '08 model years.

Further out, General Motors says it may offer a 330-hp diesel V8 for its largest SUVs by model-year 2010. The company is cagey about details for now, but says this new diesel will be a 32-valve dual-overhead-cam design--and clean enough for sale in all 50 states. GM projects a Yukon so equipped would get around 28 mpg in city driving vs. 21 for a comparable gas-engine model.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

4WD LT w/leather 4WD LT w/leather, nav. sys. 4WD LTZ w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 6 6 5.8

Tahoes with 5.3-liter V8 have fine power from any speed. Transmission shifts smoothly, though some testers complain of delayed downshifts. No opportunity to test with 4.8 V8. Towing capacity is 7700 lb.

Ethanol-blended fuel, called E85, is available in most states and can be less expensive than regular-grade gasoline. E85 can be used in versions of the Tahoe with the 5.3-liter V8. Test Tahoes showed no difference in acceleration when using E85.
Fuel Economy

4WD LT w/leather 4WD LT w/leather, nav. sys. 4WD LTZ w/nav. sys. Class Average
3 3 3 2.7

Test 4WD LTZ averaged 15.4 mpg in mostly highway driving. Over 7044 miles, extended-use 4WD LTZ averaging 14.1 mpg on regular-grade fuel, 11.6 on E85. Test 4WD LTs averaged 14.5-14.8 mpg in even city/highway driving. Tahoe uses regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

4WD LT w/leather 4WD LT w/leather, nav. sys. 4WD LTZ w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 6 6.4

Tahoes with 17-inch tires have carlike comfort over bumps, though suffer some floaty motions over dips and swells. LTZ's standard Autoride suspension quells some float, but doesn't add demonstrably to ride comfort. Its 20-inch tires transmit minor road imperfections more readily than the 17s.
Steering/Handling/Braking

4WD LT w/leather 4WD LT w/leather, nav. sys. 4WD LTZ w/nav. sys. Class Average
4 4 4 3.7

Alert reactions to steering. While some testers say the steering is too sensitive at highway speeds--especially with 20-inch tires--all agree it lacks the sloppiness that plagued the 2000-2006 generation. These are tall, heavy vehicles, so they never feel nimble. But there's no excessive body lean in turns with base suspension, even less with Autoride. Low-speed maneuverability aided by relatively tight turning circle. Brakes feel strong, but some testers want better pedal modulation.
Quietness

4WD LT w/leather 4WD LT w/leather, nav. sys. 4WD LTZ w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 7 6.5

Moderate highway-speed wind rush. No undue road noise, even with 20-inch tires. Powertrain a model of refinement.
Controls

4WD LT w/leather 4WD LT w/leather, nav. sys. 4WD LTZ w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 6 6 6.4

Large gauges, but some testers find markings too indistinct for best legibility. Most controls logically placed, operate with precision. Navigation system, however, absorbs too many audio functions, complicates what ought to be simple adjustments. It also suffers small, fussy controls that require familiarization. High marks to upscale, contemporary cabin ambience. Assembled with attention to detail. Most interior materials feel high-grade, though soft-touch surfaces are scarce.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

4WD LT w/leather 4WD LT w/leather, nav. sys. 4WD LTZ w/nav. sys. Class Average
9 9 9 8.7

Bench or bucket, seats are supportive. Generous head, leg room, though bench seat's cramped center position should be reserved for emergency situations. Available power-adjustable pedals a convenience for shorter drivers. Rearview camera aids aft visibility, but distorts distances, compromising usefulness.
Room/Comfort (rear)

4WD LT w/leather 4WD LT w/leather, nav. sys. 4WD LTZ w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 8 8 7.7

Spacious 2nd row in all models. With $425 option, 2nd-row seats spring forward to ease access to 3rd row, though passage is still tight, and seats must be manually restored to original position. Third row best left to children; low-to-floor cushion forces knees-up discomfort for anyone else. High step-in complicates ingress/egress.
Cargo Room

4WD LT w/leather 4WD LT w/leather, nav. sys. 4WD LTZ w/nav. sys. Class Average
8 8 8 8.6

Spacious with two rows of seats. Adequate for single row of grocery bags behind 3rd-row seat. Folded 3rd-row seatbacks rest well above level of rear load floor, complicating loading of larger items. Third-row seats unlatch easily, but are heavy and cumbersome to remove. Cabin storage enhanced by large center console bin. Roomy door pockets in front, but none in rear.
Value within Class

4WD LT w/leather 4WD LT w/leather, nav. sys. 4WD LTZ w/nav. sys. Class Average
10 9 8 7.6

Chevrolet's 2007 redesign of this large SUV addresses the most egregious flaws of its predecessor: sloppy steering and subpar interior appointments. Third-row accommodations are still best suited to children, but for smooth power, utility, and surprising overall refinement, Tahoe is a Best Buy value among large SUVs.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

From The Back Seat
Mark Bilek Hard to fault the new Tahoe. Still king in the class, now by a larger margin--even over large luxury SUVs. Full-size SUV buyers need look no further.

Tom Appel Our LTZ was a pricey tester, listing for a crispy $51,500. At $40-45K., a judiciously optioned LT is the value king here, offering best-in-class utility, and surprising refinement. Looking big? Put Tahoe on the list--but watch the bottom line.

From The Back Seat
Chuck Giametta If you can cotton to its size, and don't mind a very tall step-in or a third row arrangement that's terribly inefficient for either maximum cargo hauling or comfortable passenger accommodations, this Tahoe continues to prove itself remarkably accomplished and, with the above exceptions in mind, very easy to live with.

John Biel With $6420 in options (above and beyond the package necessary to turn an LTZ into an LTZ), this test vehicle's sticker easily clears $50,000. That makes it a pricey proposition to buy and--with low-teens fuel economy--a pricey vehicle to feed. But it is solid, powerful, and comfortable, and an absolute must-see for anyone with legitimate need for the capability this kind of vehicle can provide.

Matt Jaster An excellent choice for motoring multiple passengers around town, the Tahoe is a solid ride in almost every facet of the class.

Tom Appel The ideal four-adult long-haul cruiser.

From The Back Seat
Chuck Giametta When the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator do 3rd-row passenger and cargo duty so much better than GM's entries, we're remiss for not leveling sharper criticism of the Chevrolet/GMC/Cadillac large SUVs on these vital points.

Ed Piotrowski The sub 12-mpg performance of this vehicle on E85 makes using ethanol an even more questionable proposition, given that there's no dramatic savings in terms of cost per gallon between the two types of fuel. Still, giving consumers the option to use one fuel or another is never a bad thing.
