The combination of rear-wheel drive and Z71 off-road suspension is probably not going to be a popular one among Silverado buyers. As such, remove it from the options list, along with our test truck's leather upholstery (without heated front seats), and the power sunroof. That brings the as-tested price to under $30,000. You still get the excellent 5.3-liter V8 engine, a better ride, and stylish 18-inch wheels with grippy off-road tires. That's not a bad deal at all.

Chevy is suited in some nice armor for the coming pickup battle. A good thing, because the new Toyota Tundra promises to lure a fair number of once-loyal domestic devotees. Credit Chevy (and GMC) for drivetrain refinement, pleasant cabins, and aggressive pricing. Note: if you're not actually going off road, avoid the ride-compromising Z71 suspension with its obnoxious locking rear axle.
