2007 Chevrolet Corvette Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2007 Chevrolet Corvette Review
Chevrolet's two-seat V8 sports car comes as a coupe and convertible. Corvette coupes are hatchbacks with a lift-off roof panel. Convertibles have a manual-folding fabric top and heated glass rear window; a power folding top is optional. Base models have 400 hp and a 6-speed manual transmission. An optional 6-speed automatic includes steering wheel paddles for manual operation. Z06 is a hatchback coupe with fixed roof panel. It has 505 hp and a 6-speed manual. All Corvettes have ABS, traction/antiskid control, and run-flat tires. Side airbags are standard on convertibles, optional on coupes. Z06s have specific suspension, tires, and brakes. Optional on base models is GM's Magnetic Selective Ride Control that automatically adjusts firmness within two driver-selectable modes. Also available is a high-performance Z51 package that has a firmer, nonadjustable suspension.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Offering more power and style than typical Sporty/Performance vehicles, Premium Sporty/Performance Cars usually cost much more and have more comfort and convenience equipment. Two-passenger convertibles and four-seat coupes rule the roost in this class.

Our Best Buys are the BMW Z4 and Chevrolet Corvette. Our Recommended picks are the Jaguar XK Series and Porsche Boxster, and Porsche Cayman.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Jaguar XK Series and Volkswagen Eos.
News
Despite General Motors' many troubles, the long-rumored high-performance Corvette has been spied in prototype testing for a reported 2009-model debut. Names being whispered include "Blue Devil" (the original project title), Stingray/Sting Ray, Z07, and simply SS. Whatever it's called, the most potent production 'Vette ever allegedly packs some 650 hp from a supercharged 6.2-liter version of the base 6.0 V8. Informants hint at a 0-60 time of just 3.5 sec, abetted by paring pounds from the current top-dog Z06 via more extensive use of carbon fiber and first-time application of polycarbonate material. Some outer body panels are sure to be unique, if only to help justify a projected price of around $100,000. Word is the engine will be handbuilt at the GM Performance Center in yearly batches of 1500-2000, making this a fairly rare road rocket. More news as it comes in, so keep checking back with us.

Of more immediate interest is the addition of two limited-edition Corvettes for 2007. The Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 Champion Z06 celebrates driver Ron Fellows and his success with racing C6R Corvettes in the GT1 class of the American LeMans Series. Production will be limited to 300 for the U.S. market and 99 for the rest of the world. They wear Arctic White paint and Monterey Red Metallic front-fender stripes with Machine Silver borders. A Ron Fellows insignia with callouts of his ALMS championship years nestle within a driver-side stripe done in Victory Red. Other unique touches include a full-width rear spoiler, windshield banner, and interior trim. The Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 Champion Corvette Z06 will be available this spring. Base price is $77,500, including destination. GM OnStar assistance and a navigation system, the only options, push the tab to $79,945.

A specially trimmed Corvette convertible is the Official Pace Car for this year's Indianapolis 500 race, and Chevy will follow tradition by offering 500 replicas for retail sale. Specific features include Atomic Orange paint, Indy 500 exterior graphics and fender badges, a Z06 rear spoiler, and new "split-spoke" aluminum wheels. All pace-car replicas come only with the base V8. The Z51 performance package is standard, however, so are a 6-speed manual transmission, OnStar and navigation. The 6-speed paddle-shift automatic is the only option. The replica ragtop lists for $66,995 base including destination, $68,245 with the automatic.

Acceleration

Cpe w/Z51, man. Conv w/Z51, man. Conv w/nav. sys., Mag. susp., auto. Z06 w/nav. sys. Class Average
10 10 10 10 8.1

No opportunity to time base model, but Chevy claims under 4.5 sec 0-60 mph with either transmission--and they feel that fast. Manual gearbox has slick, crisp action, though some testers noted balkiness when shifting quickly. Automatic shifts with authority, though never feels harsh. Chevy pegs Z06 at a scorching 3.7 sec 0-60 mph, credible based on our test.
Fuel Economy

Cpe w/Z51, man. Conv w/Z51, man. Conv w/nav. sys., Mag. susp., auto. Z06 w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 5 5 3 4.6

With manual transmission, test base coupes averaged an impressive 19.6-19.0 mpg, convertible 19.4. With automatic transmission, test convertibles averaged 20.7 mpg overall, 15.5 mpg in mostly city driving. Test Z06 averaged 15.2 mpg. Chevrolet recommends premium-grade fuel for base V8, requires it for Z06.
Ride Quality

Cpe w/Z51, man. Conv w/Z51, man. Conv w/nav. sys., Mag. susp., auto. Z06 w/nav. sys. Class Average
2 2 4 3 4.5

Base suspension firm, but compliant for a sports car, though high-speed moguls still trigger trace of float. Z51 setup uncomfortably stiff over even small bumps, doesn't fully eliminate unwanted body motions. Magnetic Selective Ride Control splits the difference: Its Touring mode provides remarkably good bump absorption, but with some residual body movement, while Sport setting quite taut over broken surfaces. Z06 also stiff, but rarely harsh.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Cpe w/Z51, man. Conv w/Z51, man. Conv w/nav. sys., Mag. susp., auto. Z06 w/nav. sys. Class Average
10 10 10 10 8.6

Quick steering, tenacious smooth-road grip, little cornering lean. Traction/antiskid control a welcome safety net. Z51 suspension trims body lean, sharpens responses, but stiff enough to allow deviation from intended path in fast, bumpy corners. Z06 needs careful throttle modulation in fast turns, or the rear end will fishtail. Big, powerful brakes for short, stable stops.
Quietness

Cpe w/Z51, man. Conv w/Z51, man. Conv w/nav. sys., Mag. susp., auto. Z06 w/nav. sys. Class Average
3 2 2 2 4.5

Voluminous V8 bellow except at lower rpm, where there's a marked burble. Constant, copious road rumble. Convertible subject to more ambient noise than coupe.
Controls

Cpe w/Z51, man. Conv w/Z51, man. Conv w/nav. sys., Mag. susp., auto. Z06 w/nav. sys. Class Average
7 7 6 6 6.7

Clear gauges, mostly logical controls. Available head-up display useful, can be switched off. Navigation system includes, but doesn't complicate, audio functions. Its responsive voice-recognition feature further simplifies things. Interior ambience sporty, though grained padded surfaces mix with a few dull, hard plastic pieces. Removable roof panel in one test coupe rattled. Available convertible power top works without fuss, though must be manually latched/unlatched from windshield frame.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Cpe w/Z51, man. Conv w/Z51, man. Conv w/nav. sys., Mag. susp., auto. Z06 w/nav. sys. Class Average
5 5 5 5 5.9

Comfortable, enveloping seats. Adequate head, leg room. Cockpit wider than most sports cars'. Manual-tilt steering column standard; power-telescope feature aids driver comfort but requires pricey option package. Entry/exit is drop in/climb out; long doors don't help. Thick roof pillars hamper visibility to all corners, especially top-up in convertibles. Test base coupe and Z06 suffered annoying distortions in rear window.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Cpe w/Z51, man. Conv w/Z51, man. Conv w/nav. sys., Mag. susp., auto. Z06 w/nav. sys. Class Average

Cargo Room

Cpe w/Z51, man. Conv w/Z51, man. Conv w/nav. sys., Mag. susp., auto. Z06 w/nav. sys. Class Average
6 2 2 6 2.2

Great for a sports car. Both body styles have sufficient space for two golf bags, but liftover is high, and coupes lack a partition between cargo hold and cabin. Cockpit storage minuscule.
Value within Class

The Best Buy Corvette is fast fun. Base models are reasonably practical daily drivers that cost thousands less than rival sports cars with similar performance. That also goes for the 505-hp Z06 version, which is among the fastest cars in the world. Don't order the stiff-riding Z51 option before test driving it on a bumpy surface, however.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

From The Back Seat
Ed Piotrowski As a pure performance machine, few other sports cars can approach Corvette's aptitude, and none can come close in terms of price. With the 6.2-liter LS3 V8 engine on the horizon, Chevrolet is upping the performance ante even higher. Still, if you can't wait for the 2008 models, an '07 'Vette is more than satisfying.

Jack Stewart Who needs overhead cams. The big overhead-valve V8 delivers all the power anyone could want, is always smooth, and has great fuel economy.
