2007 Chevrolet Aveo Full Review
Date Published: 6/26/08
2007 Chevrolet Aveo Review
Sedan versions of Chevrolet's smallest car get revised body work for 2007. Aveo sedans retain the wheelbase of 2004-2006 models, but are 3 inches longer overall and have freshened exterior and interior styling. The Aveo 4-dr hatchback is called Aveo5 for '07, but it repeats the styling and features of the 2004-2006 model. LS trim returns for both body styles. The base SVM model now comes only as a hatchback. The sole engine is a 103-hp 4-cyl with a 5-speed manual transmission or optional 4-speed automatic. Front side airbags are standard; curtain side airbags are unavailable. SVM and LS models have 14-inch wheels; 15s are optional on LS hatchbacks, standard on LT. Newly standard on sedans is a digital audio player plug-in. Optional are ABS and sunroof.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. The subcompact class is made up of the smallest hatchbacks, sedans, and wagons on the market. These are generally considered economy cars.

Our Best Buys include the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio. Our Recommended picks are the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Hyundai Accent, Honda Fit and Suzuki SX4.
News
There's talk of a full redesign for 2008 Aveos, but we think that won't occur until at least 2009. Why? Because General Motors would likely need more than one year to recoup its investment in the restyled '07 sedan. Whenever it appears, the makeover shouldn't stray far from today's Aveo in terms of dimensions and powertrain. We give the hatchback a 50/50 chance of continuing.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

LS hatch, auto. LS sdn, man. LS sdn, auto. LT sdn, auto. Class Average
3 4 3 3 3.4

Hatchback and sedan adequate on takeoff and around town. They feel slightly quicker with manual transmission, but no Aveo has enough power for swift highway passing or brisk acceleration on short freeway on-ramps. Manual has rubbery shift action. Automatic often hesitates to kick down for passing.
Fuel Economy

LS hatch, auto. LS sdn, man. LS sdn, auto. LT sdn, auto. Class Average
6 7 6 6 7

Test automatic-transmission sedans averaged 24.5-28.4 mpg. Test automatic-transmission hatchback averaged 29.9 mpg. No opportunity to measure with manual transmission. Aveo uses regular-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

LS hatch, auto. LS sdn, man. LS sdn, auto. LT sdn, auto. Class Average
5 5 5 5 5

Aveo is impressively absorbent for a subcompact car on most bumps. Unlike with many small, light cars, only large, sharp bumps trigger pounding through suspension, body structure. Aveo suffers only minor bobbing and pitching over irregular pavement.
Steering/Handling/Braking

LS hatch, auto. LS sdn, man. LS sdn, auto. LT sdn, auto. Class Average
5 5 5 5 5.1

Petite size and responsive, if heavy, steering make for nimble low-speed moves. Body lean, noseplow in turns increases as speed does. Brakes have good stopping control, but we recommend getting the optional ABS.
Quietness

LS hatch, auto. LS sdn, man. LS sdn, auto. LT sdn, auto. Class Average
4 4 4 4 3.9

Overall noise suppression is par for the class, but any Aveo suffers from marked engine, road, and tire noise.
Controls

LS hatch, auto. LS sdn, man. LS sdn, auto. LT sdn, auto. Class Average
5 6 6 6 5.7

Gauges easy to read. Controls logically placed. Audio system mounted within easy reach, but tiny buttons, knobs difficult to manipulate while driving on hatchbacks. Sedan's revised interior has simpler audio deck with larger buttons. Budget-grade plastics dominate decor, but freshened sedan's materials more pleasant.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

LS hatch, auto. LS sdn, man. LS sdn, auto. LT sdn, auto. Class Average
5 5 5 5 5.4

Comfortable seats are softer and a bit higher than in many entry-level cars. Driver positioning aided by standard height-adjustable seat, tilt wheel. Good head room, but tall folks might want more leg space. Visibility to rear corners hindered by thick roof pillars in sedan; hatchback's pillars are thinner.
Room/Comfort (rear)

LS hatch, auto. LS sdn, man. LS sdn, auto. LT sdn, auto. Class Average
3 3 3 3 3.7

Good head room. Leg room tight with front seats set far back. Seat rather flat, but high mounting means adults don't sit knees-up.
Cargo Room

LS hatch, auto. LS sdn, man. LS sdn, auto. LT sdn, auto. Class Average
6 3 3 3 4.6

Hatchback has room for just a row of grocery bags behind rear seatbacks. But those fold without removing headrests, and cushions flip forward to make a fairly flat load floor. Sedan trunk surprisingly spacious. Interior storage meager, with small bins in console and dash.
Value within Class

LS hatch, auto. LS sdn, man. LS sdn, auto. LT sdn, auto. Class Average
5 6 6 6 7.1

Aveo is imported from General Motors' South Korea manufacturing branch; cars built in that country have been mechanically trouble-free during our tests. The likable Aveo is surprisingly refined for its price and compares well with budget rivals Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio, though those cars come with curtain side airbags, an important safety feature this Chevrolet does not offer.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

From The Back Seat
Ed Piotrowski Aveo is decently powerful and offers many comfort and convenience features for the price. Fuel economy trails most others in the subcompact class, and curtain side airbags are unavailable. Small-car shoppers would be well advised to scout our Best Buy and Recommended choices before looking at the smallest Chevy.

John Biel Push a door shut and feel the lack of heft, or tromp the pedal to pass and sense the middling acceleration and you'll remember that this is an economy subcompact. But, in the top LT trim level at least, it's a comfortable and useful sedan with a decent level of equipment and mid- to very high-20s fuel mileage. Throw in that even at full sticker with delivery it's still a sub-$15,000 car and it becomes a true consideration for the budget shopper.

From The Back Seat
Chuck Giametta If Chevrolet wants to offer an entry-level sedan with a design so outdated and road manners so arthritic, it shouldn't have to import it from South Korea. This domestic automaker, which never has shown the ability to build a modern small car, could have done just as bad a job. In an age of the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa and Suzuki SX4 -- tall, roomy subcompacts with decent ride quality and forward-thinking layouts -- the ill-mannered Aveo sedan is not worth considering.

Damon Bell The Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio offer curtain side airbags and a slightly higher level of features per dollar, but the Aveo is a decent, livable vehicle that is a fine choice for shoppers on a tight budget.

Ed Piotrowski This is a decent little car in sedan form. Unfortunately, for the same amount of money as our well-equipped Aveo LT sedan, you can purchase a Suzuki SX4 or Hyundai Accent, both of which are more dynamically sound and refined.

John Biel Even our lanky official test sibling who could have used more rear-seat leg room on a trip from Chicago to Indianapolis for the 500 admired the relative room in the Aveo sedan. Ride and trunk space are other high points. Power is just so-so, but open-road fuel economy--even with car loaded--is noteworthy. It's too bad that antilock brakes cost extra ($400),but at $15,700--as our test car listed with options and delivery--the Aveo LT sedan deserves a serious look from shoppers in this segment.
