2007 Cadillac Escalade Full Review
Date Published: 5/06/08
2007 Cadillac Escalade Review
Cadillac's truck-type SUV is redesigned for 2007 with more power, fresh styling, and new features. Escalade wagons are basically premium editions of General Motors' Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, while the Escalade EXT crew-cab pickup is a gilded version of the Chevrolet Avalanche. The wagons come in regular length and longer ESV editions. EXT features a folding midgate separating cab from cargo bed. All these vehicles are about the same overall size as the 1999-2006 generation they replace.

Regular length or ESV, Escalade wagons seat seven in a 2-2-3 layout, or eight with an optional three-person 2nd-row bench. EXT seats five. Escalade wagons are available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive that lacks low-range gearing. EXT and ESV are AWD only. The only engine is a 403-hp 6.2-liter V8; it replaces a 345-hp 6.0 V8. A 6-speed automatic supplants a 4-speed as the sole transmission and has a shift-lever button for manual operation. ABS, traction/antiskid control with rollover sensors, and automatic-adjusting shock absorbers are standard; 22-inch wheels are optional. Among new standard features are curtain side airbags that cover all seating rows and include rollover deployment. Leather upholstery and power-adjustable pedals also are standard. As in GM's other large SUV wagons, a spring release option flips the 2nd-row seats to provide 3rd-row access. Newly standard on wagons is a power liftgate with opening glass, plus heated 1st- and 2nd-row seats. New options include front-seat cooling, a navigation system with rearview camera, and power-retractable running boards.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Typically based on mainstream Large SUVs, Premium Large SUVs are super-sized luxury liners. All are powerful, pricey, and extremely thirsty at the pump.

Our Best Buy is the Cadillac Escalade. Our Recommended picks are the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Audi Q7, Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.
News
Forget about the rumored high-performance V-Series versions of the just-redesigned Escalade trio. Cadillac says they just aren't needed. But spies think the regular models will be freshened for model-year 2010. That assumes sales hold up well enough to justify the expense, and that's as uncertain right now as what will happen to gas prices.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

AWD Base AWD Base w/22-in. whls., nav. sys. ESV EXT w/22-in. whls. Class Average
6 6 6 6 5.4

All Escalades have ample power for any situation. Transmission changes gears smoothly, though some testers cite an occasional reluctance to downshift for passing. Towing capacity: base wagon, 7400 lb.; EXT, 7600; ESV, 7800.

Fuel Economy

AWD Base AWD Base w/22-in. whls., nav. sys. ESV EXT w/22-in. whls. Class Average
3 3 2 3 2.5

Test regular-length Escalades averaged 15.0-15.6 mpg. Test ESV averaged 13.8 mpg. Test EXT averaged 13.8 mpg. Cadillac recommends premium-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

AWD Base AWD Base w/22-in. whls., nav. sys. ESV EXT w/22-in. whls. Class Average
7 7 8 7 6.6

Betrays truck-type design with minor structural shudder on rough pavement. Ride otherwise comfortably absorbent, even with 22-inch tires. ESV/EXT's longer wheelbase contributes to smoother ride.
Steering/Handling/Braking

AWD Base AWD Base w/22-in. whls., nav. sys. ESV EXT w/22-in. whls. Class Average
4 5 4 4 4

Stable, confident in low-to-moderate speed changes of direction. Faster corners trigger obvious body lean and, with 18-inch tires, fair amount of noseplow. Optional 22-inch tires sharpen cornering manners. Testers divided on steering; some laud feel, response, others says it's vague and overassisted. Strong brakes have reassuringly firm pedal, but fast stops trigger lots of nosedive.
Quietness

AWD Base AWD Base w/22-in. whls., nav. sys. ESV EXT w/22-in. whls. Class Average
7 6 7 6 6.7

Quiet enough, but only midpack for premium-large-SUV class. V8 subdued at highway speeds, but roars during rapid acceleration, and exhaust note prominent nearly always. Wind rush noticed from large door mirrors and around front doors from 65 mph on up. Moderate coarse-surface tire thrum with 22-inch treads.
Controls

AWD Base AWD Base w/22-in. whls., nav. sys. ESV EXT w/22-in. whls. Class Average
7 7 7 7 6

Gauges large, but have blue pointers that can be hard to see in daylight. Controls within easy reach. Navigation system has large easy-read touch screen, absorbs but doesn't complicate audio functions. Cabin has good assembly quality, and mostly top-notch materials, though some cabin plastics disappoint at these prices.

Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

AWD Base AWD Base w/22-in. whls., nav. sys. ESV EXT w/22-in. whls. Class Average
9 9 9 9 8.3

Big-rig space on wide, comfortable seats, though tallest drivers may want still more head, leg room. Folding the midgate on EXT requires moving front seats forward slightly, reducing leg room. Standard power-adjustable pedals, but absence of telescoping or power-adjustable steering column surprising at this price level. Visibility impeded astern and to right-rear by roof design, but standard rear obstacle detection and available rearview camera compensate. This is a tall truck, so some climbing needed to get in.
Room/Comfort (rear)

AWD Base AWD Base w/22-in. whls., nav. sys. ESV EXT w/22-in. whls. Class Average
8 8 8 8 7.1

Another highish step to 2nd row, where comfortable seats furnish good head and leg room. In either wagon body length, thinly padded 3rd-row bench will cramp those over 5-ft-6, and accessing it demands a low crouch while clearing flipped 2nd-row seats. With $425 option, those 2nd-row seats fold/tumble readily at the push of a release button (for buckets) or lever (for bench), but must be manually returned to the upright position.
Cargo Room

AWD Base AWD Base w/22-in. whls., nav. sys. ESV EXT w/22-in. whls. Class Average
8 8 9 5 7.3

In standard-length wagon, only grocery-bag space behind 3rd-row bench, but plenty with those seatbacks flopped down. Generous space behind 3rd row in ESV. In both wagons, 3rd-row seat is split into 50/50 sections that don't fold flush with the floor and are heavy and cumbersome to remove or install. (EXT shares Chevrolet Avalanche design, so see the Avalanche report for an evaluation of EXT cargo room.) Good cabin storage includes large bi-level console bin.
Value within Class

AWD Base AWD Base w/22-in. whls., nav. sys. ESV EXT w/22-in. whls. Class Average
9 8 10 7 5.5

Escalade wagons are basically GMC Yukon Denalis with Cadillac looks, a pinch more power, extra standard features, and higher prices. All of GM's redesigned 2007 large SUVs are Best Buys in their market segments, and although Escalade wagons may not be worth every penny of their extra cost over the Denali, they are a good value compared with other premium large SUVs.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

From The Back Seat
Mark Bilek GM's new Tahoe, Yukon, and Escalade are so much better than anything else on the market. it's hard to imagine any other automaker trying to sell a big SUV.

Tom Appel Cadillac did a great job giving Escalade a unique look and feel. Still, despite its extra power, I see little value here when compare to the excellent Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. Buy Escalade for the bling, not because its a better truck than its cheaper stablemates, it's not.

From The Back Seat
Chuck Giametta There's hardly a better argument for buying a thoughtfully equipped $36,000 Tahoe than this $60,000 Escalade. Replacing a few--but by no means enough--of the Tahoe's hard plastic interior panels with padded ones does not justify this Cadillac's lofty airs. Even the mighty 6.2-liter V8, as we have found with the Denali's 6.0, doesn't shame the smooth, hardworking 5.3 in the "lesser" versions of these SUVs. (And the 5.3 is the only one with fuel-saving cylinder deactivation.) Escalade's perforated leather upholstery is quite nice, but the shiny plastic grille, trinket-like fender vents, and silly plastic medalions, are cheap and self-conscious. Work the ratchety rear-seat releases, hear the lid slam down on the console bin, notice that the thin plastic dashboard vents don't adjust above the horizontal...there's little of genuine high-class quality here. But in design, value, and taste, there is plenty that is vulgar.

Ed Piotrowski Escalade continues as the 'King of Bling.' And, looks aside, the 2007 iteration is a well-executed SUV. Skip the optional 22-inch wheels, but (and I never thought I'd say this) pony up for the navigation system. It cuts down on the hard plastic surfaces and gives you a helpful backup camera.

John Biel Seventy-three point seventy-eight: That is the number of U.S. dollars it cost this driver to put almost 22 gallons of premium gasoline in this test Escalade at $3.38 a gallon. That's what you'll pay to play with this status symbol. The new Escalade delivers smooth, abundant power and a cushy ride that's downright astounding for a truck. Still, the Escalade's core values can be had for less in the related Chevrolet or GMC SUVs.

From The Back Seat
Tom Appel Mileage seems to have improved for 2007, with the new engine and 6-speed automatic chipping in to conserve fuel. But 16 mpg is still pretty crummy if you're not moving lots of people and stuff on a regular basis. My tirade aside, Escalade does what a big-lux rig ought to, and prices are at the low end of the class as a bonus. Be aware, this giant Caddy screams "look at me" far too loudly, at least for this driver.

From The Back Seat
Tom Appel From behind the wheel, one loses the sensation of driving something so completely bombastic. The Escalades are fine rides, laden with useful power and oozing utility. But the bathed-in-chrome fascia and massive profile would make even Richard Simmons self conscious. A shame, because in EXT guise this half-Caddy, half-pickup transformer is truly useful. If you can live with the bling, this could be your truck.
