2007 BMW Z4 Review
BMW's American-built two-seaters have inline 6-cyl engines and come in convertible and hatchback coupe body styles. The base 3.0i convertible has 215 hp, 3.0si models 255, the high-performance M versions 330 hp. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard for all. Optional except for M models is a 6-speed automatic. All Z4s have ABS, traction/antiskid control, and front side airbags. The 3.0i and 3.0si include run-flat tires. Convertibles have a fabric top with glass rear window; a power top is standard for the M version, optional otherwise. A navigation system is available.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 18 classes based on size, price, and market position. Offering more power and style than typical Sporty/Performance vehicles, Premium Sporty/Performance Cars usually cost much more and have more comfort and convenience equipment. Two-passenger convertibles and four-seat coupes rule the roost in this class.

Our Best Buys are the BMW Z4 and Chevrolet Corvette. Our Recommended picks are the Jaguar XK Series and Porsche Boxster, and Porsche Cayman.

New or significantly redesigned models include the Jaguar XK Series and Volkswagen Eos.
News
As things look now, the Z4 line won't be redesigned until early next decade. Changes should be minimal until then, though one or two engine swaps are possible. These would involve the 300-hp twin-turbo 6-cyl from the 3-Series and '08-model 5-Series passenger cars, and/or the new 4.0-liter V8 from the redesigned 2008 M3 performance models. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, sources say BMW is readying a larger sports car for launch in 2009, perhaps as a 2010 model in the U.S. This so-called "Z9" is a spiritual successor to the retro-look turn-of-millenium Z8, but will have contemporary-BMW styling. No word yet on engines, but one or more are possible, all borrowed from existing BMWs. These include a 300-hp twin-turbo six, the 4.0-liter V8 from the upcoming new M3, and the 500-hp V10 from the M5 sedan and M6 coupe and convertible. There's also talk of a 600-hp V12. Pricing is anybody's guess, but the "Z9" should start well below the Z8's $130,000 level. Still, BMW will be gunning for the new Audi R8 and other big-buck "exotics," plus expected newcomers like a redesigned Acura RSX and a high-power Lexus sports car.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

3.0si coupe, manual 3.0si coupe, automatic M convertible M coupe Class Average
8 8 9 9 8.1

Their high-revving engines require lots of rpm for speediest getaways, but furnish ample passing punch without undue shifting. Still, slick, crisp, short-throw shifts make manual transmission a pleasure. Alert automatic transmission shifts decisively, but never feels harsh.
Fuel Economy

3.0si coupe, manual 3.0si coupe, automatic M convertible M coupe Class Average
5 5 5 5 4.6

Test 3.0si coupe with automatic transmission averaged 22.5 mpg in mostly highway driving. Test M coupe and convertible both averaged 18.8 mpg. All Z4s require premium-grade fuel.
Ride Quality

3.0si coupe, manual 3.0si coupe, automatic M convertible M coupe Class Average
4 4 3 3 4.5

Appropriately firm for a high-performance car, with M versions slightly less yielding. Suspension transmits most every bump and tar strip, yet has enough compliance to avoid harshness. Impressive structural rigidity, even in the convertible.
Steering/Handling/Braking

3.0si coupe, manual 3.0si coupe, automatic M convertible M coupe Class Average
9 9 10 10 8.6

Agile, grippy, nearly flat in corners. Steering accurate, quick, but feels artificially heavy to some testers. Wide tires follow road grooves, but true tracking otherwise. Powerful brakes reward with impressively short, stable stops.
Quietness

3.0si coupe, manual 3.0si coupe, automatic M convertible M coupe Class Average
5 5 4 4 4.5

Engines makes enthusiast-pleasing full-throttle growl, but are reasonably quiet at lower rpm. M engines more vocal than 3.0 versions. Tire noise intrusive on most surfaces. Convertible quiet enough with top up, but suffers more wind rush than coupe.
Controls

3.0si coupe, manual 3.0si coupe, automatic M convertible M coupe Class Average
8 8 8 8 6.7

Gauges well-placed, but graphics not the best. Most switchgear logical, accessible, but available navigation system takes study, complicates audio operation. Top-notch interior materials assembled with care.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

3.0si coupe, manual 3.0si coupe, automatic M convertible M coupe Class Average
4 4 4 4 5.9

Intimate cabin feel, but with adult head and leg room. Multiadjustable sports seats may be too snug for some, seem shy on padding. Their large side bolsters, the low sports-car stance, and longish doors can impede entry/exit. Manual tilt/telescopic steering wheel a driver plus. Visibility compromised by low seating position and coupe's low-profile rooflines.
Room/Comfort (rear)

3.0si coupe, manual 3.0si coupe, automatic M convertible M coupe Class Average
0 0 0 0 .6

(No rear seating.)
Cargo Room

3.0si coupe, manual 3.0si coupe, automatic M convertible M coupe Class Average
3 3 2 3 2.2

Convertible trunk not bad for a two-seat sports car. Holds several gym duffels or two rolling carry-on bags. BMW says two golf bags fit. Hatchback has slightly more cargo volume, but luggage bay is unevenly shaped. Sparse interior storage in both body styles.
Value within Class

3.0si coupe, manual 3.0si coupe, automatic M convertible M coupe Class Average
9 8 5 5 5.4

They're true sports cars, yet also reasonably practical daily drivers for well-heeled enthusiasts. 3.0 versions have slightly less-thrilling performance than the Ms, but are no less rewarding to drive, cost less, and deliver better fuel economy. Thus, the 3.0i and 3.0si best reflect our Best Buy accolades.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
NA = price note available, NC = no charge.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
