2006 Volkswagen Rabbit and GTI Review
Volkswagen drops the Golf name and revives a badge last used in 1983 to tag its entry-level model the Rabbit. These 2-dr and 4-dr hatchbacks are redesigned for 2006 and are accompanied by a sporty version of the 2-dr called the GTI. All share their underskin structure and powertrains with VW's Jetta sedan. Rabbit and GTI are dimensionally similar to the 1999-vintage models they replace, but have different styling and more power. Rabbit comes in a single trim level with a 150-hp 5-cyl engine vs. the previous generation's 115-hp 4-cyl. GTI retains a turbocharged 4-cyl, but now with 200 hp vs. 180. Rabbits have manual transmission or an optional 6-speed automatic with manual shift gate. GTI gets a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed sequential manual transmission (SMT). Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and traction control are standard on Rabbits and GTIs. So are front side airbags and curtain side airbags. An antiskid system is standard on GTI, optional on Rabbit. Wheel sizes range from 15 inches on Rabbit to optional 18s on GTI. GTIs also have a sport suspension and sport seats, plus unique trim inside and out. Among available features are a sunroof, navigation system, and leather upholstery.
