2006 Toyota Sequoia Review
Toyota's American-built large SUV comes in SR5 and uplevel Limited models. The only engine is a 273-hp V8, the only transmission a 5-speed automatic. Both Sequoia models come with rear-wheel drive or with 4-wheel drive. The 4WD can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes low-range gearing and a locking center differential. All Sequoias have antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and traction/antiskid control. Standard seating is for eight. Limiteds seat seven with optional 2nd-row buckets and center console. A safety option includes front side airbags and curtain side airbags; the curtains cover all three seating rows and include rollover deployment. SR5 is available with load-leveling suspension, Limited with selectable rear height control. Options include a navigation system and DVD entertainment.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large SUVs are traditionally workhorse 7-plus passenger wagons with brawny chassis, ample towing ability, lots of cargo space, and generally abysmal fuel economy. These vehicles offer towing and payload ratings similar to large pickup trucks.

Our Best Buys include Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, and Ford Expedition. Our Recommended picks are GMC Yukon, GMC Denali, and the Toyota Sequoia.
News
Sequoia's first redesign is now said to be on for 2008. It will borrow much from the new-generation Tundra pickups that start sale early in calendar '07, including an available 5.7-liter V8 with 6-speed automatic transmission and a much larger package with more-aggressive styling. Record gas prices and a slump in big-SUV demand don't bode well for sales, but market conditions may be more favorable by the time the new models arrive.
