ACCELERATION

Standard, man. AWD XR, auto. XRS w/17-in. whls. Class Average
4 3 5 4.4

Engines need high rpm for best performance. In most situations, the 126-hp models feel almost as strong as 164-hp Matrix XRS/Vibe GT. Pontiac says base manual-transmission front-drive Vibe takes about 9.5 sec 0-60 mph; expect the same of comparable Matrix models. Heavier AWDs take about 11.5 sec. Test Matrix XRS did 8.5 sec 0-60; expect the same of Vibe GT.

FUEL ECONOMY

Standard, man. AWD XR, auto. XRS w/17-in. whls. Class Average
7 7 6 6.7

Test 126-hp front-drive Standard with automatic transmission averaged 26.6 mpg. Test AWDs averaged 25.4-28.4. Expect 22-25 mpg overall from 164-hp models. Manufacturer recommends premium-grade fuel for 164-hp engine, regular otherwise. Note that AWD fuel tank is 11.9 gal vs. 13.2.

RIDE QUALITY

Standard, man. AWD XR, auto. XRS w/17-in. whls. Class Average
5 5 4 4.9

Varies some with model and equipment. Frontdrive versions with 16-inch tires nicely absorb most bumps. AWDs and especially FWDs with optional 17-inch tires can jiggle over patchy pavement and freeway expansion breaks.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

Standard, man. AWD XR, auto. XRS w/17-in. whls. Class Average
5 5 6 5.6

These tall wagons are more prone to crosswind wander at highway speeds than lower-built small cars, but have responsive steering and assured cornering behavior with only moderate body lean. Optional 17-inch tires enhance grip. Only ABS models available for testing so far, show good stopping performance.

QUIETNESS

Standard, man. AWD XR, auto. XRS w/17-in. whls. Class Average
4 4 3 4.2

Disappointing. Engines noisy, boomy at high rpm, none too relaxed in typical highway cruising. Noticeable wind rush and coarse-surface tire thrum, too.

CONTROLS

Standard, man. AWD XR, auto. XRS w/17-in. whls. Class Average
6 6 6 5.9

Smallish gauges in deep tunnels not that easy to see in some daytime conditions, and their bright trim rings can dazzle. Control layout simple, logical. Cabin design modern, youthful. Sturdy finish and materials, in line with prices.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

Standard, man. AWD XR, auto. XRS w/17-in. whls. Class Average
6 6 6 5.5

Driving position more upright than in typical compact car. Fine head room, even with optional sunroof. Lanky adults may wish for more leg-stretching space. Seats comfortable for long trips, but lack adequate lateral support for spirited driving. Visibility slightly cluttered over the shoulder, good otherwise.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

Standard, man. AWD XR, auto. XRS w/17-in. whls. Class Average
5 5 5 3.9

Enough head and leg room for two large adults, but knee clearance gets tight with front seatbacks reclined, and bench seat isn't that comfortable. Doors could open wider and need broader thresholds, but tall body minimizes stooping on entry/exit.

CARGO ROOM

Standard, man. AWD XR, auto. XRS w/17-in. whls. Class Average
7 7 7 4.7

Front-passenger seat folds flat for cargo-carrying versatility, as does split rear seat. Fine overall space for the exterior size. Cargo floor covered in durable plastic. Bountiful small-item storage includes large glovebox and under-floor spaces around spare tire.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

Standard, man. AWD XR, auto. XRS w/17-in. whls. Class Average
10 9 9 6.2

Matrix and Vibe are appealing alternatives to conventional small wagons and compact SUVs. We like their utility, good road manners, available all-wheel drive, and Toyota-grade reliability. We don't like the needlessly noisy engines and the harsher, high-strung nature of the Matrix XRS/Vibe GT. Note that base prices are generally a bit lower for Matrix vs. comparable Vibes, though Pontiac offers more-frequent factory rebates and other incentives.
