2006 Toyota Corolla Review
Unchanged for 2006, this popular small sedan lends its platform to Toyota's Matrix wagon and the related Pontiac Vibe. Corolla offers base CE, sporty S, luxury LE, and performance-oriented XRS models. All use a 1.8-liter 4-cyl engine. CE, S, and LE send 126 hp through 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic transmissions. XRS has 164 hp and mandatory 6-speed manual, plus unique trim, sport suspension, and 16-inch wheels instead of 15s. ABS with tire-pressure monitor is standard on XRS, optional otherwise. Front side airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags are available linewide. S and LE offer an optional antiskid system. Leather upholstery is available for LE.

News
Corolla is still on for a 2008 redesign featuring a somewhat wider and taller new architecture with more interior space. We think the 4-cyl engine will grow to at least 2.0 liters to handle the new models' likely added weight. The redesign reportedly includes a gas/electric version, though our moles don't expect it until a year or two after launch. Whenever it appears, the hybrid Corolla should use a smaller new drivetrain that Toyota says will cost half as much to make as previous system, thus narrowing the price gap with conventional models. All the new Corollas employ a quite versatile platform said to be destined for a dozen upcoming Toyota models worldwide, including new offerings in the youth-oriented Scion line.
