2006 Toyota 4Runner Full Review
Date Published: 11/23/08
2006 Toyota 4Runner Review
Toyota's truck-type midsize SUV comes in SR5, Sport Edition, and Limited trim. All offer a 236-hp V6 or a 260-hp V8. A 5-speed automatic is the only transmission. All models come with rear-wheel drive. V6 versions are also available with 4-wheel drive that can be left engaged on dry pavement. V8s are available with all-wheel drive. Both systems have low-range gearing and include hill descent control. Hill ascent control is standard on all 4Runners. So are ABS and traction/antiskid control. SR5s and Limiteds are available with a 3rd-row seat to increase capacity to seven passengers from five. Optional on all are front torso side airbags and curtain side airbags that cover the first two seating rows and include rollover deployment. The glass in 4Runner's liftgate powers up and down. A firmer suspension is standard on Sport Editions, optional for Limiteds. A load-leveling suspension is available for V8 Limiteds. Other options include DVD entertainment and navigation system with rearview camera.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Larger than Compact SUVs, Midsize SUVs offer a mix of car- and truck-type construction, V6 and V8 power, and up to 8-passenger seating. This class also includes crossover vehicles.

Our Best Buys include Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. Our Recommended picks are Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Ford Freestyle, Nissan Murano, Nissan Xterra, and Toyota 4Runner.

New or significantly redesigned models include Hummer H3, Jeep Commander, Pontiac Torrent, and Subaru B9 Tribeca.
News
Sources say 4Runner won't see an immediate, major change. A redesign is possible around 2009.

Acceleration

2WD SR5, V6 4WD SR5, V6 AWD Sport Edition, V8 Class Average
5 5 6 5

V6 more than adequate for most needs. V8 has ample, ready power. Both abetted by smooth, responsive transmission. Kudos for standard traction control and hill ascent features. Towing capacity is 5000 lb.
Fuel Economy

2WD SR5, V6 4WD SR5, V6 AWD Sport Edition, V8 Class Average
4 4 4 3.8

No opportunity to measure with V6. Test AWD V8 Sport averaged 17.3 mpg in mostly highway driving. Toyota recommends premium-grade fuel for both engines.
Ride Quality

2WD SR5, V6 4WD SR5, V6 AWD Sport Edition, V8 Class Average
5 5 5 5.4

Copes well with small bumps, but rough surfaces cause bounce and aftershock-jiggle typical of truck-based SUVs. Sport suspension only a tad stiffer. Load-leveling setup doesn't affect comfort.
Steering/Handling/Braking

2WD SR5, V6 4WD SR5, V6 AWD Sport Edition, V8 Class Average
4 4 4 4.1

Heavy and tall, so cornering lean marked. Sport's suspension trims it a bit, but all models tend to bob and weave on imperfect pavement. Steering nicely weighted. Strong brakes are easy to modulate. Antiskid system enhances control.
Quietness

2WD SR5, V6 4WD SR5, V6 AWD Sport Edition, V8 Class Average
6 6 6 5.2

Among the quieter SUVs of this type. Wind rush, tire roar evident at highway speeds, but neither is severe. Both engines quiet in normal operation. V8 emits a muted whine under full throttle; V6 is scarcely louder.
Controls

2WD SR5, V6 4WD SR5, V6 AWD Sport Edition, V8 Class Average
7 7 7 6.3

Gauges deeply recessed, can be tough to read. Convenient controls work with typical Toyota slickness, but markings may be too small for some eyes. Standard automatic climate system simple, versatile. All trim levels nicely appointed inside. No opportunity yet to test with navigation system, which incorporates some radio functions.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

2WD SR5, V6 4WD SR5, V6 AWD Sport Edition, V8 Class Average
7 7 7 6.7

Seats comfortable, but fairly low to floor. Driving position easily tailored with available tilt/telescope steering wheel, height-adjustable seat, power lumbar adjustment. Large door mirrors contribute to fine all-around visibility. Models without upgraded audio get novel wide-angle mirrors inside rear roof pillars that expose some blind spots when backing up. Standard running boards partly offset lofty step-in height, but reduce ground clearance off-road.
Room/Comfort (rear)

2WD SR5, V6 4WD SR5, V6 AWD Sport Edition, V8 Class Average
7 7 7 6.2

Second-row seat nicely contoured but set low, allowing good head room but forcing adults to sit knees-up. And it's a squeeze for three-across travel. Toe space poor without front seats elevated. Third-row suits only children. Note that rear DVD entertainment unavailable with 3rd-row seat--a family unfriendly omission. As in front, tall step-in hampers entry/exit.
Cargo Room

2WD SR5, V6 4WD SR5, V6 AWD Sport Edition, V8 Class Average
8 8 8 8.3

Split rear seat folds without removing headrests. Handy bag holder folds from rear of console. Cargo area has tie-downs, nets, cubbies. Useful double-deck cargo shelf folds from floor; it's standard or available depending on model. Power liftgate window a novel asset.
Value within Class

2WD SR5, V6 4WD SR5, V6 AWD Sport Edition, V8 Class Average
6 8 8 5.7

Some like-priced rivals offer a smoother ride and sharper on-road handling, but 4Runner is tough to beat for refinement, off-road ability, and overall execution. Few direct competitors match its array of traction enhancers. Toyota's reputation for reliability and high resale value clinch our Recommended ribbon.

Price note: Prices are for vehicles distributed by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. The dealer invoice and destination charge may be higher in areas served by independent distributors.
Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
