2006 Scion xB Review
Toyota's youth-oriented brand extends the 2006 version of its boxy hatchback into the 2007 model year. Scion says a replacement for xB is due in calendar 2007 as a 2008 model. The xB shares a front-wheel-drive platform with Scion's xA hatchback. Both seat five, but the xB has a taller body with a rear liftgate. The only engine is a 103-hp 4-cyl with a choice of manual and optional automatic transmissions. ABS and an antiskid system are standard. Side airbags are unavailable. Scions are sold through Toyota dealers, which carry numerous factory-approved accessories, including larger alloy wheels to replace the xB's standard 15-inch steel wheels. An available CD audio system includes a plug-in for most digital media players.

News
Sources say Toyota is working up a bigger but still boxy new xB for a 2008-model debut. A possible template is the 2005 t2B concept, which resembles a cross between Honda Element and Toyota FJ Cruiser. Spy photos of jury-rigged prototypes suggest the new model will be somewhat longer than today's xB. It's also likely to be wider and taller to accommodate some cool "recreational" features inside. There's talk of using Toyota's European Avensis sedan platform, which now supports the Scion tC coupe and would bring a larger engine with more performance. If all this proves out, Scion would have a bigger box than archrival Nissan, which is expected to bring in a new version of its aptly named Cube compact wagon for 2008 or '09.
