2006 Saab 9-3 Review
Saab's best-selling car gains a wagon variant and a turbocharged V6 for 2006. The 9-3 offers a 4-dr sedan, 2-dr convertible, and the new SportCombi 4-dr wagon. All come as the 2.0T with a 210-hp 4-cyl and as the Aero with a 250-hp V6. Both engines are turbocharged and come with manual or automatic transmission. All 9-3s have ABS and traction/antiskid control. Aeros have a sport suspension and larger wheels. Sedans and SportCombis have front side airbags and curtain side airbags. They seat five and have split folding rear seatbacks. The convertible seats four and has front side airbags designed to protect torso and head. It has a power fabric top, heated glass rear window, and a rollover bar designed to pop up in an impending tip. Leather upholstery is standard. Sedans and wagons offer a sunroof. A navigation system is optional on all. Saab is owned by General Motors, and the 9-3 shares its basic architecture with the Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Premium Compact Cars are similar in size but more expensive than Compact Cars. Premium Compacts have more standard equipment and an upscale image when compared to Compact Cars.

Our Best Buys in the Premium Compact Car class are Acura TSX, Audi A4, and BMW 3-Series. At this time we have no Recommended picks.

New or significantly redesigned models in this class include Audi A3 and Lexus IS.
News
Sources expect a redesigned 9-3 in 2008, which likely means an '09-model U.S. debut. Little is known about this project except that it will be based on GM's upcoming Epsilon 2 architecture, which will also serve a next-generation Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6. Production shifts to Germany from Saab's own plant in Sweden.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

2.0T sdn, auto. 2.0T conv, auto. Aero sdn, man. Aero SportCombi, auto. Class Average
6 6 7 7 6.2

2.0T models fairly quick, but launch, passing response dulled by brief turbo lag; test convertible with automatic did 7.8 sec 0-60 mph. V6 helps Aero models feel stronger from a stop, furnish better passing response; they have little turbo lag. Saab says Aero sedan does 6.4 sec 0-60 with manual transmission, 6.6 with automatic.
Fuel Economy

2.0T sdn, auto. 2.0T conv, auto. Aero sdn, man. Aero SportCombi, auto. Class Average
6 6 5 5 5.4

With automatic transmission, test 2.0T sedan averaged 23.3 mpg, 2.0T convertible 24.0 mpg. Aero wagons averaged 20.6-20.7 mpg overall, 24.9 in mostly highway use. Manual-transmission Aero convertible averaged 21.7 mpg; no opportunity to measure with other manual-transmission versions. Saab recommends premium-grade fuel for all 9-3s.
Ride Quality

2.0T sdn, auto. 2.0T conv, auto. Aero sdn, man. Aero SportCombi, auto. Class Average
7 7 6 6 5.9

All 9-3s firm, poised, but 2.0Ts are most compliant over bumps. Taut sport suspension, low-profile tires cause Aeros to thump, jiggle over larger bumps. Even convertible structure impressively rigid, with little body flex on uneven surfaces.
Steering/Handling/Braking

2.0T sdn, auto. 2.0T conv, auto. Aero sdn, man. Aero SportCombi, auto. Class Average
7 7 8 8 7.2

All 9-3s feel nimble. Precise steering, though some drivers might prefer heavier feel. Aero has better grip, response in turns than 2.0T. Solid body structure means convertible handles almost as well as sedan and wagon. All versions nicely free of torque steer--veering to the side--during rapid acceleration.
Quietness

2.0T sdn, auto. 2.0T conv, auto. Aero sdn, man. Aero SportCombi, auto. Class Average
7 5 7 6 6.1

Any 9-3 has more tire noise than class norm; convertible and SportCombi have more than sedan. Engines generally muted, but whine during acceleration, and some testers annoyed by V6's cruising thrum. Wind rush apparent at highway speed, but doesn't disturb conversation. Convertibles not uncomfortably loud, top up or down.
Controls

2.0T sdn, auto. 2.0T conv, auto. Aero sdn, man. Aero SportCombi, auto. Class Average
6 6 6 6 7

Main gauges easy to read. Most switchgear in center dashboard pod, angled toward driver. Climate, audio readouts in dashtop screen are separate from actual controls, requiring driver to look in two places to accomplish one task. Audio-system adjustments not self-explanatory. Trial and error the rule in deciphering navigation system, too. Ignition switch is on console between front seats--a Saab tradition we find unobjectionable. Contemporary-design interior assembled with care, but not all cabin plastics up to premium-class benchmarks. Turn-signal, windshield-wiper stalks feel cheap, have brittle movement.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

2.0T sdn, auto. 2.0T conv, auto. Aero sdn, man. Aero SportCombi, auto. Class Average
7 7 7 7 6.5

Comfortable seats, good all-around support. Standard tilt/telescope steering wheel helps tailor position, though tallest drivers might want it to raise higher and may wish for more rearward seat travel. Center roof pillar compromises ingress with driver seat fully rearward. Rear roof pillars, headrests obscure aft visibility on all body styles.
Room/Comfort (rear)

2.0T sdn, auto. 2.0T conv, auto. Aero sdn, man. Aero SportCombi, auto. Class Average
4 2 4 4 3.6

Good head clearance. Knee room in sedans, wagons disappointingly tight if front seats more than halfway back. Same for toe space if driver seat isn't elevated. Rear leg room cramped in convertibles, and 2-dr body style taxes entry/exit.
Cargo Room

2.0T sdn, auto. 2.0T conv, auto. Aero sdn, man. Aero SportCombi, auto. Class Average
4 2 4 7 4.7

Sedan has tall trunk with considerable volume. SportCombi delivers true wagon utility. All have plenty of interior storage space. Glovebox door stylishly integrated into dashboard and opens to reveal large, deep compartment. Convertible's 12.4-cu-ft trunk among largest of any ragtop, but shrinks to 8.3 cu ft when top is stowed.
Value within Class

2.0T sdn, auto. 2.0T conv, auto. Aero sdn, man. Aero SportCombi, auto. Class Average
8 7 7 8 6.1

Saab's 9-3s are Recommended as dynamically capable premium compacts that include lots of safety and convenience features in their base price. The convertible is especially appealing. Direct competitors from BMW and Lexus have rear-wheel-drive designs that handle better in fast cornering. Along with the Audi A4, they also offer all-wheel drive. But 9-3's 2.0T models beat most rivals on price, and the Aero's turbocharged V6 allows it to compete in power.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

From The Back Seat
Chuck Giametta Despite GM's mucking-up the Saab brand with the woefully misguided 9-2X and 9-7X, the 9-3 2.0T somehow makes it through with its Swedish heritage in place. That's a wonderful thing, for the result is a compact car with its priorities well in order. The astutely tuned suspension, natural-feeling steering, and sensible 16-inch tires combine for a balance of real-world ride and handling that's all but disappeared from the automotive landscape. The cabin is lean and roomy in a refreshing sit-up-straight and eat-your-whole-grains kind of way. And the thrifty turbo four works its little heart out to furnish stealthy speed. Your best bet is to stick with the under-$30,000 versions in this line: They're nicely equipped and you'll cushion the pain at resale time. I'm not sure why the 9-3 feels worlds apart from the Chevy Malibu and Pontiac G6, but all who value mature individuality should be pleased it does.

Kirk Bell Option pricing tends to be high, so I think the best deal is a lightly optioned 2.0T. The engine provides plenty of pep, the interior ambience is fashionably high-tech, and the car has light, crisp handling.

Mark Bilek The 9-3 remains a very interesting alternative to me-too 3-Series clones. It's fun to drive, economical, affordable, and can play the role of sport sedan or family sedan. I'd like to see a little more rear-seat leg room and better ergonomics, but on the whole, 9-3 is a good value.

Rick Cotta In refinement, price, and prestige, Saab seems to straddle the line between "regular" and "premium" brands. A 9-3 2.0T comes standard with a host of features that can cost extra on some premium rivals, making its $26,000 base price seem almost a bargain. Yet its compact interior dimensions may be a problem for some buyers, who could find any number of similarly equipped midsize cars for the same money. And that brings us back to the question as to which side of the regular/premium line you place the Saab--and how much that's worth.

From The Back Seat
Mark Bilek At $38,000 dare I say this 9-3 sport wagon is competitively priced? It's got leather, power everything, navigation, the powerful V6. It's a great car and a great alternative to BMW, Audi, and Infiniti. I'd do away with the fussy navigation system controls, however.

Rick Cotta $35,000 will buy a nicely equipped 9-3 Aero SportCombi, and that seems a fair value to me--partly because there are so few direct competitors. Rear seat room is tighter than it should be, but the Aero otherwise provides a fine combination of utility, luxury, and sporty performance.

From The Back Seat
Chuck Giametta Given that they're based on the same basic platform, it's a wonder how much sportier and sophisticated the 9-3 convertible feels compared to the Pontiac G6 convertible. Given that the Saab Aero model, which we tested, cost some $10,000 more than a G6, that may be understandable. A 9-3 2.0T ragtop reduces the price difference to about $7000. Still, I don't imagine that the difference in feel comes down so much to dollars as it does to engineering acumen. Couldn't GM amortize some of that expensive Swedish expertise by sharing it with its other divisions? It seems to be taking this tack with Saturn for the Aura.
