2007 Kia Sorento
Making its world debut at the 2006 New York Auto Show is the 2007 Kia Sorento. This South Korean automaker first introduced this 5-passenger midsize SUV in 2003. The redesigned '07 Sorento doesn't look that different on the outside, but gets a massive power boost and a new interior. When the Sorento goes on sale this fall, it will compete with Chevrolet Trailblazer, Ford Explorer, and Honda Pilot.

The redesigned Sorento retains its body-on-frame chassis, 5-speed automatic transmission, and rugged off-road capable 4WD systems, but exchanges a 193-hp 3.5-liter V8 for an all-aluminum, 262-hp 3.8-liter V6. That's a 26-percent gain over the previous engine and more powerful, says Kia, than Ford Explorer V6 and Toyota 4Runner V8. With the new engine's increased output, maximum towing capacity is now 5000 pounds.

The new Sorento will again be available with rear- or four-wheel drive and come in two trim levels: LX and upscale EX. The LX 4WD system is part-time, has a low range, and isn't designed for use on dry pavement. Available on EX is Kia's torque-on-demand (TOD) full-time 4WD system. The TOD system detects wheel slip up and automatically transfers power between the rear and front wheels. TOD may be used on dry pavement. For hardcore off-road junkies, a limited slip differential for the rear axle is available.

Subtle exterior revisions include projector-beam headlights, revised grille and front fascia, and new tail lamps. Inside, Kia upgrades the center stack and floor console, revises the gauge cluster, and adds wood and metal trim. Also new are stalk-mounted cruise control switches and steering-wheel mounted audio controls.

Standard safety features include front and side-curtain airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitor, active front headrests, and driver knee airbag. Also standard are air conditioning, power windows and locks, a 10-speaker mp3-capable audio system, four 12-volt power outlets, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, rear privacy glass, cargo covers, and keyless entry. EX models add power sunroof, fog lights, power driver's seat, and homelink remote garage opener.

The '07 Sorento will be built in South Korea, and, like every Kia, comes with a 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Kia wouldn't comment on pricing, but we'd expect the LX to list for about $25,000 with a fully equipped EX topping $30,000.

At the same press conference, Kia announced an agreement with Sirius satellite radio. One of the last automakers on the satellite radio bandwagon, Kia claimed that Sirius would be available on all models by 2009.
