2006 BMW Z4 Coupe and Z4 M Coupe
Better late than never is the motto at BMW, as the German automaker introduces coupe versions of its Z4 roadster at the 2006 New York Auto Show. The 2006 BMW Z4 coupe and Z4 M coupe go on sale in the summer of 2006 and compete with the Audi TT, Mercedes-Benz SLK, and Porsche Boxster in the premium sporty-car market.
Z4 coupe comes in 3.0i trim and features a 3.0-liter inline six that makes 255 hp. Six-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions are available. With manual transmission, BMW claims the Z4 3.0i will accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than six seconds and is capable of a top speed of 155 mph. The suspension system, while similar to the Z4 roadster, is tailored for a more athletic ride. Also included is BMW's electric power steering system. The coupe will have a base price of $40,795.
The M coupe adds an even sportier suspension, upgraded wheels, tires, and brakes, and a 330-hp 3.2-liter six. The only transmission is a close ratio 6-speed manual. Unique M features include distinct front and rear styling, interior upgrades, and exclusive "M" badging. BMW claims that the M coupe will have a base price that's less than $50,000.
Both models come only with rear-wheel drive and feature run-flat tires, tilt/telescope steering wheel, and stability control. The Z4 coupe and Z4 M coupe will be built at BMW's plant in South Carolina.
