Basically, it's VW's 4-dr Rabbit hatchback with an elevated suspension and SUV-flavored styling. All-wheel drive should be available as well as front drive, but don't look for low-range gearing in this "soft roader." Three engines are likely: a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cyl with around 200 hp, a 3.2-liter V6 with around 250, and-as on the concept-a 2.0-liter turbocharged "clean diesel" 4-cyl with a rumored 140 hp and a hefty 240 lb-ft of torque. The turbodiesel will also be an option for the 2008 Rabbit and Jetta.
VW says it will be legal in all 50 states, thanks to use of the "Bluetec" cleanup system comprising a soot filter, catalytic converters, and NOx (oxides of nitrogen) holding tank. Pricing won't be announced until just before sales begin, but there's talk of a $24,000 minimum and a top end of around $35K. Keep checking back with us for further information.
Incidentally, Mercedes-Benz offers several Bluetec diesels for 2007; it developed the system with supplier Bosch. VW's Audi division will also offer Bluetec models come 2008.
