Until now, boutique enthusiast-car manufacturer Lotus offered just
one model for sale in the U.S., the Elise. That's due to change later
this year, when Lotus adds a second model called Exige. In addition,
Lotus adds a competition focused "Track Pack" suspension package for
both models.
For years, Lotus buyers were wooed by sexy styling, but
disappointed by unreliability and lackluster build quality. Today's
styling is just as appealing, and with Toyota-sourced mechanicals,
quality has improved greatly.

The 2006 Lotus Exige,
making its new-world debut at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show, is based
on the two-seat Elise roadster. While the Elise is intended for street
use, the Exige is designed as much for racetrack work as everyday
driving. Exige shares its Toyota-sourced 190-hp twincam 4-cyl engine
and 6-speed manual gearbox with Elise, but houses them in a fastback
coupe body. Special sport suspension and seats are standard. Exige's
"Track Pack" offers 10-position Koni adjustable shock absorbers and an
adjustable front antiroll bar and adjustable spring mounts. Other
options include traction control with or without limited-slip
differential, plus a Premium Package comprising leather upholstery,
satellite radio and--to the undoubted horror of Lotus die-hards--a
cupholder. The Exige carries a suggested starting price of
$50,990.
