ACCELERATION
| LX | EX | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.2 |
Strong from a stop, though Sedona doesn't build speed that quickly. Highway passing is worry-free after a short wait for transmission to downshift. Transmission isn't always quick to follow manual gear changes.
FUEL ECONOMY
| LX | EX | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 4.2 |
Test Sedona averaged 22.7 mpg in mostly highway driving, 18.1 mpg with more city use. Note that Kia recommends premium-grade fuel for Sedona.
RIDE QUALITY
| LX | EX | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 5.8 |
Composed but not quite carlike. Smooths out small bumps well. Bounces over larger humps. EX's 17-inch tires make ride more jiggly over rippled pavement.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| LX | EX | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 4.7 |
Typical for a large minivan: Never nimble, and with notable body lean in turns. EX's 17-inch tires don't noticeably improve handling. Steering nicely weighted but feels numb. Antiskid system, traction control are welcome standard features.
QUIETNESS
| LX | EX | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 5.7 |
Engine emits refined growl under acceleration, a whisper otherwise. Wind rush, tire thrum noticeable at highway speeds.
CONTROLS
| LX | EX | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 |
All controls within easy reach, nicely sized, clearly marked. Three-zone climate control a handy standard feature. Interior materials include some hollow-sounding plastics but are generally appropriate for the price.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| LX | EX | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6.7 |
High, chairlike position affords view over most traffic. Ample head room, but tallest drivers will want more leg room. Center tray table flips down easily for access to rear seating area. As on competitors, tray lacks a rubber mat to keep items from sliding around. Easy ingress/egress. Large front pillars can block visibility to front corners, but rear visibility is unobstructed.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| LX | EX | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6.8 |
Comfortable 2nd-row seats have plenty of head and leg room for adults, even with front seats fully back. Third row comfortable for adults only on short trips; has low cushion, tight leg room with 2nd-row seats positioned fully rearward. Standard power rear-door windows a bonus.
CARGO ROOM
| LX | EX | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 10 | 9.9 |
With all seats in place, deep rear cargo well provides plenty of useful storage space. Third-row seat sections fold easily into the well. Second-row seats fold, and also flip forward for more floor space. They can also be removed, but weigh 60 lb each. Plenty of cubbies for small items. Families may want the EX-only $1000 Power Pkg. It includes the power sliding side doors and power rear liftgate.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| LX | EX | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.3 |
Sedona owes no apologies to our Best Buy and Recommended minivan picks in terms of size, power, utility, and safety equipment, and it bests every comparably equipped rival on price. Others may have a more carlike ride or some additional convenience features, but Sedona merits any minivan shopper's consideration.
