From the Back Seat

John Biel

The Liberty is a solid-feeling and maneuverable compact SUV with Jeep capability, which is all to the good. With the diesel engine, however, this driver didn't see the expected fuel economy--or enjoy much peace and quiet.

Kirk Bell

Let's do the math: 13.29 mpg at $2.99/gal for diesel while regular gas costs $2.25/gal + $31,765 for a compact SUV when you can buy a bigger Honda Pilot that gets better mileage = no deal at all.

Mark Bilek

Unimpressive fuel economy aside, the Liberty diesel is a good all-around vehicle. I'd wish for a little more isolation from engine noise (and smell), but Liberty's interior materials, ride, and room are better than in a few midsize SUVs.

Rick Cotta

Nearly $32,000 is a hefty price for a compact SUV, yet only $985 of that was for the diesel engine. As much as I liked the Liberty in diesel guise, it would be hard to justify for strictly on-road use, as top rivals are roomier and less expensive to buy and run.

Tom Appel

This diesel works well, but in the care of Consumer Guide failed to demonstrate any fuel economy advantage over the standard gasoline V8. Shame.
