2006 Isuzu i-280 and i-350 Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2006 Isuzu i-280 and i-350 Review
Isuzu's compact pickups are based on a design shared with General Motors. Two models are offered: the i-280 and i-350. The i-280 comes as a rear-wheel-drive extended cab with rear-hinged back doors that do not open independently of the fronts. It has a 175-hp 4-cyl engine and manual or automatic transmission. Traction control is available. The i-350 comes as a 4-wheel drive crew cab with a 220-hp 5-cyl engine and automatic transmission. The 4WD has low-range gearing but should not be left engaged on dry pavement. The i-280 has a 6-ft cargo box, the i-350 a 5-ft box. ABS is standard. Curtain side airbags covering both seating rows are standard for i-350, available for i-280. The i-280 comes with a vinyl three-passenger front bench seat, and is available with rear jump seats. Available for i-280 and standard for i-350 are cloth upholstery, and power windows/locks/mirrors. The i-350 has front bucket seats and a 3-passenger rear bench. Optional for i-350 are heated power front seats and leather upholstery.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Compact Pickups offer a true-truck design in a relatively modest package. They are best suited for personal or light-duty use rather than commercial use, heavy hauling, or towing.

Our Best Buy is Toyota Tacoma. Our Recommended picks include Dodge Dakota and Honda Ridgeline.

New or significantly redesigned models include Isuzu i-280/i-350 and Mitsubishi Raider.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

LS crew cab Class Average
5 4.8

Extended cab's 4-cyl is adequate with either transmission. Crew cab's 5-cyl only somewhat sprightlier. Both engines well-matched to quick-shifting automatic transmission. One test i-350's throttle would periodically stick, causing vehicle speed to climb until gas pedal was depressed repeatedly.
Fuel Economy

LS crew cab Class Average
4 4

Test crew cab averaged 17.8 in mostly highway driving. Manual-transmission regular cab averaged 18.1 mpg in mostly city driving. General Motors recommends regular-grade fuel for both engines.
Ride Quality

LS crew cab Class Average
4 4.3

Overall, better than most compact pickups. Still evident, however, are abrupt vertical motions over bumps and dips, with some jittery feel on badly broken surfaces; otherwise composed.
Steering/Handling/Braking

LS crew cab Class Average
4 3.9

All corner with reasonable poise, though some testers found them slow to react to steering inputs. Grip limited in corners. Overall, among the more-agile compact pickups. Good straightline stability. 4WD models have noticeably larger turning radius than 2WD versions. Brakes provide quick, even stops.
Quietness

LS crew cab Class Average
4 4.4

Less wind and road noise than most competitors, though highway wind rush prominent around doors. Prominent tire whine on coarse surfaces. GM's 5-cyl engine louder, coarser than rivals' V6s; 4-cyl par for the class.
Controls

LS crew cab Class Average
5 5.8

Climate controls simple to use, clearly marked, though audio controls require a long reach. Gauges easy to read, but some digital readouts wash out in direct sunlight. Fit-and-finish above average for the class, but materials sub par. Still, some test Colorados had a few squeaks and rattles from the dashboard area.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

LS crew cab Class Average
4 5.2

Lots of leg and head room. Seats adequately comfortable for long drives, though some testers complain of hard, flat seatbacks. Middle seat for occasional use only.
Room/Comfort (rear)

LS crew cab Class Average
4 2.5

Extended cab's rear seat best suits preteens; adults lack leg room even if front seats pushed well forward. Crew cab more spacious, but leg room still no better than a compact sedan's. On both, rear seats hard and undersized, and entry/exit difficult through small door openings.
Cargo Room

LS crew cab Class Average
4 3.7

Interior storage limited on regular cabs, good on extended and crew cabs with rear seats folded. Unique dual-position support cable allows tailgate to be secured partially open, permitting 4x8 sheets to be carried atop wheelwells with support from tailgate.
Value within Class

LS crew cab Class Average
4 6.2

Like their Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon cousins, the i-280 and i-350 are useful, well-balanced small trucks. But a sparse dealer network and questions about Isuzu's long-term viability blunt their value. Sales have been slow, so deep discounts should be available.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Side Impact, Driver 4 4
Side Impact, Rear Passenger NA 5
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

Manufacturers may periodically offer additional coverage as a purchase incentive. There offers are not reflected on this chart. The federal government requires two other warranties. The Exhaust Emission Warranty covers corrosion-related parts for 2 years/24,000 miles, plus 8 years/80,000 miles on the catalytic converter and any on-board diagnostic device. The Passenger Restraint Warranty covers seat belts and airbags for 5 years/50,000 miles.

From The Back Seat
Jamie Putnam The i-350 provided impressive ride quality for a compact pickup. But given Isuzu's vague longterm reliability $27,000 price sticker for this test vehicle, it is a difficult vehicle to recommend over some competitors.

Mark Bilek Given Isuzu's precarious market position in the U.S. I'd be hard-pressed to recommend any i-Series. However, like the Colorado on which it is based, the i-350 is an excellent compact pickup that has the most carlike ride of any and returns reasonable fuel economy. I was struck by sticker shock when I saw that this test model was $27,000, then again it was the loaded LS crew cab.

Rick Cotta Our 4x4 crew-cab tester listed for about $2400 less than a similarly-equipped Toyota Tacoma, and in most respects, it compared fairly well. The difference in price, however, will probably be more than made up for at resale time, making the Toyota a safer choice.

Tom Appel If you're non-committal about Chevy's Colorado, then you'll be absolutely ambivalent about Isuzu's i-Series trucks. Our test i-350 is a thoroughly likable truck, and dealers are likely to be offering massive discounts. But if your Spidey Resale-Value Alarm is tingling at the thought of Isuzu pulling out of the U.S. (which they almost certainly are) then keep going till you get to the Chevy store. There's nothing not to like here--save the unsettling throb of a big 5-cyl engine--but unless you think Isuzu's final U.S. offering is somehow collectible... Keep shopping.
