Vehicle Highlights

Hyundai's compact SUV is slightly smaller and less expensive than its Santa Fe SUV, but is also built on a car-type platform. Tucson offers 4-cyl and 6-cyl engines and front- or all-wheel drive. It comes in GL, GLS, and new for '06 top-line Limited trim. All have a liftgate with opening glass. GLs have a 140-hp 4-cyl and a choice of 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic with manual shift gate. GLS and Limited use a 173-hp V6 and the automatic transmission. All Tucsons are available with AWD that lacks low-range gearing but includes a dashboard switch to lock in a 50/50 front/rear power split. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and traction/antiskid control are standard. So are front side airbags and curtain side airbags. GLS and Limited are available with a sunroof. The Limited includes unique exterior trim, automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. Tucson lends its basic design to the Sportage from Hyundai's Kia division, but differs in features, pricing, and warranty coverage.

COMPETITION

Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Among utility vehicles, Compact SUVs are the least costly and offer the best fuel economy. Most utilize a car-type chassis and are not designed for heavy-duty, off-road use. Nearly all are five-passenger vehicles.

Our Best Buys include Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Mazda Tribute, and Mercury Mariner. Our Recommended picks are Honda Element, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Liberty, Kia Sportage, and Subaru Forester.

Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Rav4 are new or significantly redesigned.
