Azera is an overachiever in the showroom and an underachiever on the highway. For prices that can't be ignored, it delivers lots of standard safety features, thoughtful amenities, roomy accommodations, and an impressive horsepower rating. Its design--inside and out--is modern and cohesive. It just doesn't deliver deep-down driving goodness or engineering acumen. It gets discombobulated over bumps, goes a little wayward in quick changes of direction, and dipping into all that horsepower results in a guttural growl from underhood. This theme of surface virtues and unseen vices runs throughout Hyundai's lineup. It's a little cynical of the automaker, but Hyundai's growing sales and climbing customer-satisfaction ratings suggest the cynic may be me.

Azera makes a much stronger case for pricing a Hyundai at $25,000 than its XG350 predecessor did. It's composed, refined, and powerful, and in my eyes, a better value than Sonata. This is Hyundai's strongest threat yet to the established Japanese veterans.

Optioned only with a set of floor mats, this test Azera SE barely tops $25,000 delivered--and that's the pre-dicker sticker price. This is a surprisingly well-equipped car with decent power that's perhaps an even better bargain than its pricier Limited sibling.

Other than its Chris-Craft ride, Azera's hard to fault and the price point is amazing. For those considering Toyota Avalon or Buick Lucerne, Azera is a must drive. It even makes sense for those considering a entry-level luxury car like Lexus ES 350 or Acura TL. It would be nice if Hyundai offered a optional sport suspension for drivers under 50 years of age.

Aside from a strong, responsive powertrain, there's little here to excite the senses. But there's also little to complain about.

Loaded for under $30K, Azera makes sense for the near-luxury shopper who is brand indifferent. The ride is not quite as sorted out as, say, Lexus ES350, but the polish and power are close, and for $10,000 less comparably equipped.
