ACCELERATION
| GLS w/Premium Sport Pkg., auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 4.4 |
Automatic-transmission sedan only model made available for test so far. Acceleration is weak in most every driving condition as evidenced by the slow 11.1 sec 0-60-mph time in our test. At least the automatic downshifts promptly, smoothly for passing.
FUEL ECONOMY
| GLS w/Premium Sport Pkg., auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6.7 |
GLS sedan averaged 21.8 mpg in test that included gas-eating performance runs. Similar Kia Rio LX test car averaged 27.1 mpg with manual transmission.
RIDE QUALITY
| GLS w/Premium Sport Pkg., auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 4.9 |
Comfortable over smaller bumps, but soft suspension tuning allows moderate bounding over large high-speed humps. Surprisingly solid structural feel belies low price, enhances impression of ride comfort.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| GLS w/Premium Sport Pkg., auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.6 |
Power steering overboosted, lacks road feel. Dynamics otherwise on par for the class. Fast cornering means fair body lean, modest grip from skinny tires, though Accent feels secure, predictable. Good braking power enhanced by standard ABS, laudable at this price level.
QUIETNESS
| GLS w/Premium Sport Pkg., auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 4.2 |
Engine a bit boomy from around 4000 rpm on up, but is never objectionably loud. Wind noise modest for class, but coarse-surface tire thrum fairly high.
CONTROLS
| GLS w/Premium Sport Pkg., auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 5.9 |
Dashboard shows good design with clear gauges and simple, logical controls. Cloth upholstery has unexpectedly classy look and feel. Plastic panels look nice too, but a few feel budget-grade flimsy to the touch, and padded surfaces are scarce.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| GLS w/Premium Sport Pkg., auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 5.5 |
Fairly roomy for the class, though tall drivers may wish for more rear seat travel. Seats relatively high, seem comfortable, but need better thigh support. Comfort aided by standard height-adjustable driver seat, tilt steering wheel. Good all-around visibility.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| GLS w/Premium Sport Pkg., auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 4 | 3.9 |
Head room, foot space better than class norm. Leg, knee room tight with front seats more than halfway back. Entry/exit just OK.
CARGO ROOM
| GLS w/Premium Sport Pkg., auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 4.7 |
Shallow trunk opening complicates loading bulky items. Folding rear seatback increases useful cargo space. Cabin storage not great, but front door map pockets include handy bottle holders.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| GLS w/Premium Sport Pkg., auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 7 | 6.2 |
Accent one-ups corporate sibling Kia Rio with standard antilock 4-wheel disc brakes--and bests most class rivals with standard front side airbags and curtain side airbags. It's hardly quick, but it does deliver good fuel economy, solid construction, reasonable interior space, and more equipment than its low price implies. Hyundai's strong warranty adds to Accent's appeal among entry-level compacts.
