2006 Ford Expedition Review
With the Excursion discontinued for 2006, Expedition is Ford's largest SUV. It continues basically unchanged with a 300-hp V8, 4-speed automatic transmission, and a choice of rear-wheel drive or Ford's ControlTrac 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes low-range gearing.

All models have antilock 4-wheel disc brakes. Options include load-leveling suspension and Ford's AdvanceTrac antiskid system with rollover sensors. Expedition offers six trim levels, all with three-row seating. Seating for up to nine is available. Optional on all but the entry-level XLS version are curtain side airbags that cover the 1st and 2nd rows and include rollover deployment. Other options, depending on model, include power-adjustable pedals, rear obstacle detection, DVD entertainment, and power-folding 3rd-row seat. Lincoln's Navigator is a luxury version of Expedition with different styling, features, and pricing.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large SUVs are traditionally workhorse 7-plus passenger wagons with brawny chassis, ample towing ability, lots of cargo space, and generally abysmal fuel economy. These vehicles offer towing and payload ratings similar to large pickup trucks.

Our Best Buys include Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, and Ford Expedition. Our Recommended picks are GMC Yukon, GMC Denali, and the Toyota Sequoia.
News
Expedition and Lincoln's related Navigator are fully redesigned for 2007. Both employ the "T1" large-truck platform of the latest F-Series pickups. An extended-length Expedition, logically named Expedition EL, replaces the late Excursion as Ford's weapon against the Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Yukon XL. A new 6.2-liter "Hurricane" V8 is expected for 2008, possibly later, to give Ford horsepower bragging rights against rival GM engines and the Dodge Hemi.
