ACCELERATION
| SXT, 4-cyl | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 6 | 5.6 |
Midsize V6 rivals from Honda, Nissan, and Toyota are faster, but V6 versions of the Stratus have good power for most duty. Four-cyl models feel more lethargic relative to the competition. Automatic transmissions change gears with little fuss, though they could be quicker to downshift. AutoStick improves throttle response some.
FUEL ECONOMY
| SXT, 4-cyl | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5.2 |
Test V6s averaged 17.5-18.3 mpg. Expect slightly better mileage with 4-cyl versions.
RIDE QUALITY
| SXT, 4-cyl | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 4 | 6.1 |
SXT comfortably absorbs most bumps. R/T feels more agitated on uneven surfaces due to firmer suspension settings and low-profile 17-inch tires.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| SXT, 4-cyl | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 7 | 6.1 |
Competent on twisty roads, but R/Ts with their larger tires handle better than SXTs. R/T version's wide tires tend to follow road grooves. Too much power-steering assist for some testers, though V6 models have a degree of road feel lacking in 4-cyl versions. Stopping power sure and stable, pedal modulation good.
QUIETNESS
| SXT, 4-cyl | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.2 |
Less refined overall than Japanese-brand rivals, but 2.7-liter V6 surprisingly smooth. Wind rush reasonably well-muffled, but no model adequately filters out tire noise.
CONTROLS
| SXT, 4-cyl | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.8 |
Sensible layout except for low-mounted CD changer. Materials don't match those of import rivals.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| SXT, 4-cyl | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.6 |
Airy-feeling cabin with good space for larger adults, though some test drivers would prefer the steering wheel closer to the dashboard. Visibility good, but lane changes would be easier with bigger outside mirrors.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| SXT, 4-cyl | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 5 |
Three adults fit with a little squeezing. Head clearance a bit snug, leg room ample, but foot space tight.
CARGO ROOM
| SXT, 4-cyl | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 4.5 |
Trunk space average for class. Interior storage limited to small console, glovebox, and front-door map pockets.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| SXT, 4-cyl | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 5 | 6.1 |
Stratus is an aged sedan that lacks the power, mechanical refinement, and design polish of the midsize-class leaders. That said, prices are attractive, and a V6 version does credible duty as a sporty-feeling family car.
