2006 Dodge Magnum Review
Dodge's wagon-only Magnum gets a sedan companion for 2006. Charger and Magnum share a basic platform with the Chrysler 300 sedan. The sedan-only Charger is available only with rear-wheel drive vs. Magnum's choice of rear- or all-wheel drive.

Magnum has four versions: SE with a 190-hp 2.7-liter V6, SXT with a 250-hp 3.5-liter V6, R/T with a 340-hp 5.7-liter V8, and the high-performance SRT8 with a 425-hp 6.1-liter V8. The 5.7 V8 has Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System, which deactivates four cylinders while cruising to save fuel. All Magnums have automatic transmissions: a 4-speed on SEs, a 5-speed on all others. ABS and traction/antiskid control are optional on Magnum SE, standard on others. Available on all are front side airbags and curtain side airbags. AWD SXT, R/T, and SRT8 models have firmer suspension tuning. SRT8s add Brembo-brand brakes and specific trim.

Split folding rear seatbacks are standard. Available are adjustable pedals and a wireless cell phone link.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Large Cars comprise the biggest passenger sedans and wagons. Large, inside and out, they also include the only 6-passenger cars. Large Cars offer lots of metal for the money and are dominated by domestic brands.

Our Best Buys include Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum, Ford Five Hundred, Mercury Montego, and Toyota Avalon. At this time we have no Recommended picks.

News
A model-year 2009 introduction is still being whispered for a new Dodge Challenger "ponycar." Based on the Magnum/Charger platform, it would counter Ford's hot-selling Mustang and a rumored Chevrolet Camaro revival. Design and engineering are yet to be finalized, but count on Hemi V8 power and styling a la the recent, wildly received Challenger concept.
