At the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, Mazda unveiled its latest concept vehicle--the Kabura. It's a design that ventures beyond the compact sports coupe norm to explore several ideas that could appear in future production models. The concept has been constructed with MX-5 chassis components and falls between Mazda's MX-5 and RX-8 in overall size. a 2.0-liter 4-cyl engine powers the rear-drive Kabura. the windshield and forward portion of the roof are integrated into one seamless glass surface. Overhead portions of the glass have adjustable tinting so that the driver can twist a knob on bright days to change the roof's opacity, as desired, from clear to completely opaque.

Kabura sports unique 2+1 seating and three doors. There's a standard left-side door that provides access to the driver's cockpit and the rear jump seat. The right side is a purposely asymmetrical arrangement. After the front door is opened, touching a button slides the bonus door straight back into a cavity and out of the way, allowing access to the third seat. Kabura isn't destined for production, but rumors persist that Mazda's working on a replacement for RX-8 and this concept could be a strong hint of it's styling and features.
