2006 Chrysler Pacifica Review
Pacifica blends traits of cars, SUVs, and minivans and comes in front- or all-wheel drive. It offers a base model that seats five, and Touring and Limited versions that seat seven. All use a 250-hp V6. A 4-speed automatic with manual shift gate is the only transmission. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and a driver knee airbag are standard. Curtain side airbags that cover all seating rows are standard on Limited, optional on base and Touring. No antiskid system is offered. Pacifica's 2nd- and 3rd-row seats fold down but don't remove. Base versions are not available with certain features that are standard or optional on Touring and Limited. These include traction control, power liftgate, sunroof, navigation system, power-adjustable pedals, rear obstacle detection, and DVD entertainment.
Competition
Consumer Guide® Automotive places each vehicle into one of 17 classes based on size, price, and market position. Larger than Compact SUVs, Midsize SUVs offer a mix of car- and truck-type construction, V6 and V8 power, and up to 8-passenger seating. This class also includes crossover vehicles.

Our Best Buys include Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. Our Recommended picks are Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Ford Freestyle, Nissan Murano, Nissan Xterra, and Toyota 4Runner.

New or significantly redesigned models include Hummer H3, Jeep Commander, Pontiac Torrent, and Subaru B9 Tribeca.

News
Pacifica got off to a slow sales start and still isn't pulling in as many customers as Chrysler hoped despite recently added models. Sources say a larger, more powerful V6 is on tap for 2006 or '07, and that might help. Specifics aren't available, but we'd guess Chrysler engineers might try to take the newer 3.5 V6 up to 3.9 or 4.0 liters for something close to 300 hp. Another late rumor concerns a restyle of some kind for 2007 or '08, but again there's nothing solid to report just now.
